Position Summary:

The position of Director of Prospect Research reports to the Vice President for Development and has the overall authority and management of prospect research on individuals, corporations and foundations who are potential major gift prospects. The director will maintain and direct a comprehensive prospect management program and work closely with development officers to effectively move prospects and donors along the giving continuum.

The Director of Prospect Research will conduct pro-active research to introduce new prospects to the development team as well as other executives at the Medical Center and reactive research to provide detailed information on known prospects and donors as a major function of the position. Databases and electronic screening techniques including a proven ability to use library sources, business directories and other business publications for information retrieval are also essential;

  • Ability to conduct in-depth biographical and financial research and adheres to ethics and confidentiality policies so that researchers are in compliance with industry standards, federal regulations (e.g. HIPAA institutional guidelines, and department policies);
  • Ability to enter and update biographical information on donor database
  • Ability to prepare briefing information on prospects for monthly prospect management meetings;

Requirements:

Education:

Graduation from an accredited college with a Bachelor's degree in a related field.

Experience:

Minimum of three (3) years of relevant donor/prospect research experience for a not for profit Organization, preferably in the healthcare sector; Demonstrated ability in conducting searches on the Internet, online information databases and electronic screening techniques including a proven ability to use library sources, business directories and other business publications for information retrieval are also essential;

Ability to think critically, assess, and synthesize information; Strong writing skills and attention to accuracy and detail; Intellectual curiosity and resourcefulness in pursuing knowledge; Ability to conduct in-depth biographical and financial research and adheres to ethics and confidentiality policies so that researchers are in compliance with industry standards, federal regulations (e.g. HIPAA institutional guidelines, and department policies); Ability to enter and update biographical information on donor database. Ability to prepare briefing information on prospects for monthly prospect management meetings.

Skills:

  • Excellent written and oral communications skills and a high degree of computer
  • proficiency; Ability to work with and protect highly sensitive, confidential information;
    • Outstanding organizational and analytical skills; Knowledge of general principles of major gifts fundraising;
    • Proficiency with fundraising databases such as Blackbaud and Raiser's Edge and with a broad range of research tools; Strong Microsoft Office Suite skills;
    • Expertise with donor research methodology and practice, including wealth indicators, moves management, and data analysis;
    • Ability to independently coordinate production of projects accurately and on deadline.

Essential Functions of the Job:

  • Formulates, develops and implements proactive prospecting strategies to identify new high net worth individuals, board candidates, private and public corporations, foundations, medical staff and nursing alumni, as well as grateful patients; Assesses their philanthropic interests, giving capacity, propensity, and readiness to make a major gift to Holy Name Medical Center, including capital or planned at the leadership level;
  • Analyzes patterns of giving and characteristics of current donor pool including demographic data, employment information, levels of involvement, giving history amount, frequency, level vs. expectation, etc. and match the interests of the prospects to the needs of the Medical Center;
  • Using independent judgement, conducts and analyzes varying levels of research to support individual and institutional prospect identification, rating and qualification and contributes to the creation of detailed cultivation and solicitation strategies including assists solicitors in formulating the ask amount;
  • Conducts prospect research utilizing the latest available print resources and Internet-based methods to pursue research, collect facts, and filters through the lens of fundraising; Identifies and evaluates new research tools to remain continually up-to-date with products and services; Communicates with internal development officers and executives to secure any other relevant information;
  • Produces comprehensive biographical, financial and philanthropic profiles on prospective donors, including individuals, corporations and foundations;
  • Provides confidential profiles and briefings to prepare senior administration and development staff for prospect visits, events and solicitations;
  • Designs, develops and maintains an effective prospect research, management and reporting system via the prospect management module in Raiser’s Edge;
  • Develops and assists in preparation of key reports to evaluate prospect portfolios, activity and progress towards fundraising goals and as needed;
  • Accurately updates the Raiser’s Edge prospect management system as needed;
  • Responsible for prospect research and management written policies and procedures that include management of and access to donor files;
  • Reviews and analyzes prospect portfolios and strategies with the Vice President of Development and provides prospect management metrics to manage progress towards fundraising goals and on other matters as needed;
  • Creates and regularly disseminates resources to keep leadership and colleagues apprised of institutional (subjects/medical departments), donor prospect, and medical news with relevance to fundraising;
  • Educates frontline fundraising personnel about role of advancement research, builds partnership with gift officers to grow institutional memory, and promotes professional status of advancement research.
