Job Title: Clinical Laboratory Support Specialist, Part-time
Department: Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Position Summary: Provides clinical support for pre-analytical specimen processing and post-analytical report distribution for the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.
Requirements:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.
Experience: Phlebotomy experience preferred.
Essential Functions of the Job:
Technical:
1. Familiar with specimen requirements and patient population for all tests. Researches requirements for reference tests.
2. Processes all types of specimens, including blood, urine, body fluids and cultures.
3. Processes specimens that require special processing like bone marrow, stones, amniotic fluid and products of conception. Processes special outpatient test requests (Transplant kits, Clinical Research, etc.)
4. Diligent in processing priority specimens within the Laboratory’s STAT goals.
5. Serves as a resource for nursing units for specimen requirements.
6. Accurately labels specimens.
7. Distributes routine and STAT specimens in a timely manner to appropriate lab sections for analysis.
8. If competent, performs outpatient phlebotomy as necessary.
LIS/HIS:
1. Verifies patient registration information Assures correct current registration is used for test orders. Performs reduced registration as necessary.
2. Assures that correct physician is associated with each patient’s order.
3. Assures that all tests are entered as ordered by the physician.
4. Documents receipt of specimens in the laboratory from all sources like pneumatic tube and outreach.
5. Prints and distributes laboratory reports.
6. Assists Senior Clinical Support Specialists with downtime procedures.
Customer Service:
1. Answers the phone in a timely and professional manner.
2. Attempts to answer questions, but refers questions and problems to the appropriate laboratory personnel when necessary.
3. Documents caller information clearly and accurately.
4. Accepts physician orders with read back to verify. Asks for a faxed prescription.
5. Reports patient results by reading or faxing the report.
6. Records courier calls for pickup.
7. Dispatches couriers.
8. Schedules Glucose Tolerance Tests.
9. Monitors and improves customer service of Laboratory Front Office. Monitors appearance of Lab Outpatient Waiting Room.
Operational:
1. Notifies Senior Clinical Support Specialists when supplies need to be replenished.
2. Assists Laboratory Administrative Assistant as needed.
3. Demonstrates infection control and other safety techniques. Practices Standard Precautions.
4. Follows Hospital and Lab Policies and procedures.
5. Respects patient confidentiality. Practices HIPAA compliance.
6. Perform related duties as required
