Position Summary: Responsible for prioritizing, planning, and providing direct care to assigned patients with simple to complex health care needs.

Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with B.S.N. degree or higher

Skills: Clinical and problem solving skills.

Experience: Minimum one year med surge experience required. Previous telemetry experience or critical care experience preferred.

Certification/License: Current New Jersey Registered Nurse license. National certification related to specialty areas preferred. ACLS/BLS required.

Essential Functions of the Job:

  1. Responsible and accountable for the physical and psychological care for assigned patients.
  2. Assesses patients, evaluates, and coordinates care to changing health care needs.
  3. Responsible for initiating and managing a plan of care for all assigned patients. Implements Clinical Plan of Care as indicated.
  4. Communicates and coordinates care needs with all members of the health care team. Includes handoff to pre/post staff or primary nursing unit.
  5. Facilitates collaborative practice with physicians and other providers. Assists coworkers on an as needed basis.
  6. Initiates and implements patient teaching using appropriate education resources. Evaluates effectiveness.
  7. Initiates referrals to other health care professionals as needed.
  8. Directly supervises the practice of ancillary staff (PCA’s, Tech’s, Unit Secretaries, etc.).
  9. Assumes charge nurse responsibilities as assigned.
  10. Demonstrates a flexibility to respond and direct changing workload to meet patient/unit needs during crisis and emergency situations.
  11. Demonstrates understanding of safety and infection control practices, emergency procedures, fire drills, evacuation procedures, and internal/external disaster plans and procedures.
  12. Demonstrates knowledge in the use of equipment and devices pertinent to nursing treatment, procedures, and practices.
  13. Identifies own learning needs with respect to nursing practice and pursues educational support from the Hospital Education Department to meet these needs.
  14. Understands and demonstrates compliance with all hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  15. Routinely utilizes policy and procedure manuals via the intranet and other available reference materials to ensure consistency and accuracy in the delivery of care.
  16. Maintains and respects staff and patient confidentiality. Practices in accordance with the Patients’ Bill of Rights. Functions as a patient advocate.
  17. Demonstrates awareness of fiscal responsibilities without compromise to quality patient care by cost effectively using resources (personnel, supplies, and equipment).
  18. Maintains a clean, safe, and therapeutic patient environment.
  19. Maintains quality patient care by following unit organizational/professional standards of practice and care. Includes patient instruction and discharge follow ups.
  20. Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills.
  21. Job performance requires extensive standing and walking, as well as bending and wearing protective lead attire.
  22. Job requires employee to carry out responsibilities in patient care and non-patient care areas.
  23. Perform any related duties assigned.
  24. Functions as a preceptor for nursing staff and participates in the orientation of other unit employees.
  25. Actively participates in the development of the practice standards and protocols.
  26. Fulfills On-Call obligations as required.
