Position Summary: Responsible for prioritizing, planning, and providing direct care to assigned patients with simple to complex health care needs.
Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with B.S.N. degree or higher
Skills: Clinical and problem solving skills.
Experience: Minimum one year med surge experience required. Previous telemetry experience or critical care experience preferred.
Certification/License: Current New Jersey Registered Nurse license. National certification related to specialty areas preferred. ACLS/BLS required.
Essential Functions of the Job:
- Responsible and accountable for the physical and psychological care for assigned patients.
- Assesses patients, evaluates, and coordinates care to changing health care needs.
- Responsible for initiating and managing a plan of care for all assigned patients. Implements Clinical Plan of Care as indicated.
- Communicates and coordinates care needs with all members of the health care team. Includes handoff to pre/post staff or primary nursing unit.
- Facilitates collaborative practice with physicians and other providers. Assists coworkers on an as needed basis.
- Initiates and implements patient teaching using appropriate education resources. Evaluates effectiveness.
- Initiates referrals to other health care professionals as needed.
- Directly supervises the practice of ancillary staff (PCA’s, Tech’s, Unit Secretaries, etc.).
- Assumes charge nurse responsibilities as assigned.
- Demonstrates a flexibility to respond and direct changing workload to meet patient/unit needs during crisis and emergency situations.
- Demonstrates understanding of safety and infection control practices, emergency procedures, fire drills, evacuation procedures, and internal/external disaster plans and procedures.
- Demonstrates knowledge in the use of equipment and devices pertinent to nursing treatment, procedures, and practices.
- Identifies own learning needs with respect to nursing practice and pursues educational support from the Hospital Education Department to meet these needs.
- Understands and demonstrates compliance with all hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
- Routinely utilizes policy and procedure manuals via the intranet and other available reference materials to ensure consistency and accuracy in the delivery of care.
- Maintains and respects staff and patient confidentiality. Practices in accordance with the Patients’ Bill of Rights. Functions as a patient advocate.
- Demonstrates awareness of fiscal responsibilities without compromise to quality patient care by cost effectively using resources (personnel, supplies, and equipment).
- Maintains a clean, safe, and therapeutic patient environment.
- Maintains quality patient care by following unit organizational/professional standards of practice and care. Includes patient instruction and discharge follow ups.
- Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Job performance requires extensive standing and walking, as well as bending and wearing protective lead attire.
- Job requires employee to carry out responsibilities in patient care and non-patient care areas.
- Perform any related duties assigned.
- Functions as a preceptor for nursing staff and participates in the orientation of other unit employees.
- Actively participates in the development of the practice standards and protocols.
- Fulfills On-Call obligations as required.
