Under the general direction of the Department Chair, the Hood College Department of History invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship or advanced assistant professorship in African American history to begin January 2023. Candidates with prior teaching experience at the college/university level may be considered for an abbreviated tenure and promotion timeline. The successful candidate will teach survey courses and a broad range of upper-level courses in African American cultural, social, and intellectual history.

Additionally, the candidate will be part of the African American Studies Program. The ability to teach the survey course in U.S. history since 1877, as well as other courses in modern U.S. history, is required. In addition to pursuing excellence in teaching, the successful candidate will mentor and advise undergraduate majors and minors in both curricular and professional matters; they may also advise graduate research. Beyond their work with students, the candidate must show initiative in service to the department, the college, and broader communities. The candidate must also demonstrate a strong commitment to scholarship and its classroom applications.

With twenty-eight undergraduate majors and nineteen master’s programs, Hood College is a liberal arts institution committed to providing students with solid professional training grounded in the humanities and sciences. Located in Frederick, Maryland, Hood’s proximity to Washington, D.C. and Baltimore enables students and faculty to enrich their work in the classroom with a wealth of local research and professional development opportunities.

For the History Department, in particular, the area’s numerous national and local museums, archives, and historical sites make possible a wide array of on-site learning and internship experiences. Application deadline is June 30, 2022. 

 Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. 

Teaching, Scholarship, and Service 

  • Teaching load: 4/3 course load per academic year to include courses serving the undergraduate core curriculum, the history major and minor, and the African American Studies minor.
  • Mentor students through academic advising, internship placement and advising, and faculty & student research collaboration.
  • Contribute to the regular functioning of the department through committee work, participation in departmental extracurricular activities, and pursue the goals outlined in the department’s strategic plan.
  • Pursue a scholarly agenda and engage in other professional activities.
  • Serve the college through committee work, the development of new student learning opportunities, and the enrichment of campus-community partnerships.

Required Qualifications

  • An earned PhD in History is required by January 30, 2023. Advanced ABD candidates are welcome to apply and will be considered.
  • Record of effective teaching.
  • Demonstrated potential for research and a clear research agenda.
  • Ability to teach courses in modern American history.

  • understanding of higher education generally and the ability to work successfully as a member of a small department. 

Technology Skills 

Candidates must be familiar and comfortable with the technologies used routinely in the academic world today, including but not limited to word processing, classroom presentation software, course and information management systems, communications and social media, and online research tools.   Fluency in digital media, with the ability to enhance the department’s presence online and mentor students in digital humanities applications, is a plus for candidates in this search. 

Language Skills

Excellent spoken and written English with strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to speak effectively before groups required.  Other languages may be desirable or necessary, as appropriate to the candidate’s research field.

Mathematical Skills

The candidate must have the mathematical skills needed to manage grading and budgets. Additional quantitative skills may enhance the candidate’s research profile, depending on the candidate’s specific research.
