JOB SUMMARY
Serves as an advanced teaching assistant, supporting and leading elements of instruction on Opportunity Culture campuses. Leads small group instruction, tutors students, independently supervises full classes to provide release time to Opportunity Culture teachers, and provides other whole-class instructional support. Performs instructional and non-instructional duties under the daily direction of the teacher(s) holding ultimate responsibility for the design and implementation of educational programs and services. Assists teacher(s) in general and/or special education classrooms and may deliver direct services to students and parents. Assists teacher with preparing instructional materials and activities, reinforcing knowledge and skills, and supervising students and monitoring their progress. Assists with test administration. May provide specialized assistance for students with special needs.
Note: While this position is part of Houston ISD's future teacher pipeline, current interest in becoming a teacher is not required to serve in the Aspiring Teacher position.
MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Must be a high school graduate or hold a General Educational Development (GED) certificate.
In addition, one of the following is required:
• Associate's degree from an accredited college or university OR
• Completion of at least 48 credit hours at an accredited college or university OR
Passing score on the Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA) or the Texas Success Initiative Assessment (TSIA)
WORK EXPERIENCE
1 year of experience working with students or children. This may include, but is not limited to, work in public schools, day camps, youth groups, licensed day-care centers, church-related schools, private schools, or other similar experiences.
SKILL AND/OR REQUIRED LICENSING/CERTIFICATION
Individuals meeting the education and work experience requirements listed above are automatically eligible for an Educational Aide certificate. A current Educational Aide I, Educational Aide II, or Educational Aide III certificate is not required to apply or be considered.
LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES
No supervisory responsibilities.

- Assists teacher(s) with student academic goals by working with small groups of students and supporting whole-class instructional assignments and activities.
- Tutors small groups of students based on teacher-developed or teacher-directed tutoring plans.
- Supervises whole classes during release time provided to the teacher of record as part of an Opportunity Culture model, monitoring and facilitating projects, skills practice, digital learning, and/or other activities.
- Collaborates in the implementation of the daily lesson plans by performing tasks that reinforce learning and all knowledge and skills taught by the classroom teacher.
- Assists teacher(s) in maintaining a well-organized classroom and implementing classroom management and behavioral plans, creating an environment that is appropriate for learning. Prepares and organizes instructional materials and classrooms for instruction.
- Assists teacher by recording daily attendance, administering assessments, monitoring student behavior, and maintaining student records.
- Works closely with students who may require individual or close attention. Assists the teacher with the development of individualized programs.
- Assists teacher(s) with the planning, preparation and implementation of differentiated instruction for individual students and groups.
- Receives and responds to inquiries from parents and others. May provide translation services for students' families and teacher(s).
- Coordinates and/or participates in special programs or projects as assigned.
