What are the responsibilities and job description for the Safety Manager position at Howe, Inc.?
How you’ll contribute to the team:
Safety
- Proactively plans, directs and implements the Company’s safety program to ensure a safe, healthy and accident-free work environment.
- Oversees safety meetings and regular job site safety inspections
- Manages and oversees motor vehicle fleet safety program and conducts driver background investigations to qualify authorized drivers
Safety Program Development
- Develop and maintain company-wide safety policies, procedures, and programs.
- Assess effectiveness of safety program activities, policies, and procedures, and implements changes to improve results and achieve objectives
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, MSHA, DOT, and other relevant safety regulations.
Training and Education
- Design and implement safety training programs for employees at all levels and business partners.
- Conduct safety orientation sessions for new hires.
- Provide ongoing education on safety standards, practices, and procedures.
- Collaborate with management to address safety concerns and implement improvements.
Risk Assessment and Incident Management
- Conduct regular risk assessments and audits at project sites and Company facilities to identify potential hazards.
- Develop strategies to mitigate identified risks and ensure safe working conditions.
- Lead investigations of workplace accidents, injuries, and near misses.
- Analyze incident reports to identify root causes and recommend corrective actions.
- Maintain accurate records of incidents and safety violations.
- Manages return to work/restricted duty program.
- Manages insurance claims involving injury, vehicle, equipment or property damage.
Regulatory Compliance
- Stay updated with current regulations and industry safety standards.
- Ensure all safety protocols comply with federal, state, and local regulations.
- Prepare and submit required safety documentation and reports.
Safety Culture Promotion
- Foster a proactive safety culture within the organization.
- Promote safety awareness through regular communications and initiatives.
- Recognize and reward safe behavior and practices.
- Lead and participate in safety teams and meetings.
Emergency Preparedness
- Develop and implement emergency response plans and procedures.
- Coordinate emergency drills and exercises.
- Ensure the availability and maintenance of emergency equipment.
Reporting and Documentation
- Prepare and present safety performance reports to senior management.
- Maintain comprehensive safety records and documentation.
- Track and report safety metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs).

How you’ll qualify:
- Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, environmental science, construction management, business, or related field preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in safety management in the construction industry.
- In-depth knowledge of OSHA regulations, safety standards, and best practices.
- Professional certifications such as OSHA 30-hour Construction Safety Certification, OSHA 500, Certified Safety Professional or similar preferred.
- Active driver’s license and clean driving record.
What to expect in the office and field:
- Primarily office based with frequent visits to project site and operational areas.
- Required travel to various project site locations and facilities.
- Must be able to respond to emergencies during and after regular working hours.
- Ability to conduct site inspections and walk through various work environments, including but not limited to construction sites, office and manufacturing facilities.
- Ability to walk uneven surfaces and be exposed to various weather conditions.
- Occasional periods of sitting while driving, sitting at a desk and/or working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times.
