Job Title: Animal Care/Shelter Veterinarian Department: Clinic Classification: Full Time, Hourly Job Relationship: Reports to Executive Director. Provides direct supervision of RVTs. Position Summary: Provides spay, neuter, and other soft tissue surgeries for animals in the Clinic/Shelter. Provides daily clinical supervision of veterinary technicians, before, during and after surgery. Provides medical care and recommendations for treatment of shelter animals. Educates clients, volunteers, students and staff on proper animal care and surgery follow-up. Develops and implements standards of animal care. Coordinate and manages treatments for animals in the care of the shelter. Pay Range: Commensurate, depending on experience Revised: March 7, 2022 ___________________________________________________________________________________ Essential Job Functions: Provides surgical services and daily care to animals at the HSDC Examines animals, evaluates animals’ health and performs veterinary medical and surgical procedures including vaccinations, prescribing and administering of medications, anti-parasite treatments, orders and interprets other testing as needed. Completes behavioral evaluations and modification, dietary evaluations, and grooming (healthy coat maintenance). Supervises post-op rechecks and orders medical treatments as necessary to ensure complete surgical recovery. Provides direction to staff responsible for following prescribed treatment and maintaining treatment records for animals brought into the shelter; ensures the highest level of service and care are provided and that changes in animals’ conditions are recorded. Alerts Executive Director to animals in need of further diagnostics and provides recommendations for care. Performs all necessary euthanasia according to established protocol. Responsible for the direct supervision and performance review of clinic staff. This may include the contract veterinarian and veterinary technicians before, during, and after surgery. Alerts Executive Director to any performance concerns. Assists in the development and implementation of goals, policies and procedures for the HSDC; recommends changes in procedures as needed. Oversees cleaning and animal handling for adherence to protocol in the shelter for prevention of infectious/zoonotic disease. Establishes and maintains medical record and drug use logs to standards of veterinary and sheltering practices; ensures records are in order and complete. Ensures compliance with all state and federal laws, regulations, policies and procedures regarding clinic operations, the practice of veterinary medicine, drug control, and animal care and handling. Performs medical rounds, prescribing treatments for, and making recommendations for disposition of shelter animals. Communication and Public Relations Represents the HSDC in a professional and courteous manner at all times. Provides quality service to customers, volunteers, and staff recognizing their individual contributions to the success of our organization. Coordinates with local veterinarians and clinic/shelter professionals to promote positive and productive relationships; arranges for full-service care at a veterinary hospital for severely injured, sick or diseased animals. Actively supports staff and volunteers, and promotes the development of skills related to the advancement of our goals and mission. Communicates with clients about medical complications and recommendations; available for follow-up care as needed. Participates on committees and/or special projects as assigned. This may include, but is not limited to such projects as training efforts, fundraising, or board events. Actively promotes the HSDC’s programs and events to clients and volunteers. Promotes communication and cooperation between HSDC departments. Maintains licensure and follows safety guidelines Ensures employees maintain appropriate licensing necessary for position. Secures and maintains TDDD with Ohio Pharmacy Board. Secures and maintains DEA license for clinic. Secures and maintains clinic equipment for inspections and in good working order. Maintains controlled drug logs in accordance with federal and state laws. Maintains a current State of Ohio veterinary license in good standing. Ensures and promotes employee compliance with all posted federal and state safety and labor laws. Completes required continuing education courses. Performs other duties as assigned including, but not limited to: Informs Executive Director of special needs cases for potential public relations or direct mail stories. Performs other duties and special projects as assigned for efficient functioning of the clinic. Flexible with scheduling and available as needed when away from the facility for operational needs. Orders medical supplies, food, and pharmaceuticals. Minimum Qualifications & Experience Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from an accredited college or university. Must maintain a State of Ohio Veterinary License (DVM) in good standing. Able to perform soft tissue and dental procedures. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities 1 – 3 years experience in the field of veterinary medicine and knowledge of disease recognition in a shelter setting. High volume spay/neuter experience and knowledge of shelter medicine and herd health. Experience with pocket pets preferred. Knowledge of feral cat issues. Effective decision making and diagnostic skills and interest in pursuing treatment options with limited funding. Knowledge of shelter animal health protocols, surgical procedures and companion animal health issues. Able to work well under pressure and handle multiple tasks at one time. Outstanding customer service, oral and written communication skills. Committed to the mission, vision and values of the HSDC. Ability to develop positive working relationships with the HSDC management team. Working Conditions Work is performed constantly in an animal shelter that operates seven days per week with exposure to animals, including some with questionable health and temperament. Regularly move about the shelter to provide care to shelter and clients’ animals. Work may be performed under often unsafe and uncomfortable conditions where exposure to environmental factors such as temperature variations, odors, toxic agents, violence, noise, wetness, and disease can cause discomfort and where there is a risk of injury. Regularly operates a computer and other office equipment (i.e. calculator, copier, and printer). Occasionally positions self to handle animals of all sizes in a variety of areas and positions (low cages, high cages, on tables, on the floor, in vehicles, etc.). Constantly communicates with clients, staff members and volunteers who have inquiries and must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations. Occasionally moves animals weighing up to 100 pounds (i.e. through the shelter on leash or using other safe restraint and animal handling equipment, into and out of cages in the shelter, onto and off of exam tables). Tasks involve the ability to exert moderate but not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and lifting, carrying objects and animals of moderate weight
