Metallurgist Responsibilities
- Review customer technical specifications and determine if the product is within the scope of skelp mill vendors’ and pipe mill’s capabilities and offer exceptions/comments required to produce the order.
- Prepare skelp inquiries for prospective business.
- Participate in maintenance of the quality management system through maintenance of quality documents and internal audits.
- Interface with end user in job quotation reviews and pre-production meetings to establish requirements of the order; utilize quality staff to perform this review.
- Conduct on-site vendor audits of production and testing practices.
- Oversee review of internal and vendor reporting to ensure product compliance.
- Work with Test Lab /Non-Destructive departments to generate testing and inspection work instruction documents that contain the requirements of the pipe order.
- Create process instructions and test reporting documents with established programs.
- Maintain records of defective material for vendor claims.
- Perform statistical analysis of product chemistry and mechanical properties for skelp mill performance review and customer reporting as required.
- Coordinate contracted, non-standard product testing for pipe body with outside labs.
- Lead investigation of production problems related to metallurgical or vendor issues.
- Experience in pipeline production or steel pipe fabrication.
Metallurgist Requires
- BS in metallurgy or material science
- Experience with mechanical testing and Chemical Testing
- Related experience in melting, casting and skelp rolling
- Knowledge of statistical analysis
- Strong knowledge of MS Excel
- Understanding of API and ASTM Standards preferred
