Description/Job Summary

HGL provides environmental engineering, remediation, and construction services, as well as Military Munitions Response Program support to the U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Air Force, USACE, EPA, U.S. Department of Energy, and other federal and state government clients.


HGL is seeking a Staff Risk Assessor to work remotely or be located in one of HGL's 11 regional offices (https://www.hgl.com/locations/). The Staff Risk Assessor position will support company-wide and nation-wide projects, including hazardous, toxic, and radioactive waste, PFAS, mining, and military munitions response program projects.

Responsibilities/Duties

The Staff Risk Assessor will be responsible for leading human health risk assessments and/or ecological risk assessments in accordance with CERCLA, RCRA, and state guidance, and with support from the risk assessment team, including senior and principal level staff. Essential duties include:
  • Managing and analyzing large environmental datasets
  • Conducting statistical analyses, including statistical comparisons of background data to site data
  • Preparing tables, figures, and other data exhibits
  • Authoring risk assessments, risk assessment work plans, and other technical deliverables
  • Reviewing and interpreting environmental and toxicological studies and reports
  • Supporting remedial strategy design, including developing risk-based cleanup levels
  • Serving as the project risk assessor in project meetings and technical discussions with clients, regulatory agencies, and/or stakeholders
  • Leading junior level staff


The ideal candidate will be capable of leading both human health and ecological risk assessments. However, a candidate with strong experience in only human health or ecological risk assessments will be considered.

Required Experience

  • At least 5 years of work experience in an environmental consulting or regulatory environment on DoD or EPA projects with a focus on site investigation and human health or ecological risk assessment; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience implementing EPA's Risk Assessment Guidance for Superfund and/or EPA's Ecological Risk Assessment Guidance for Superfund.
  • Working knowledge of relevant federal regulations, especially CERCLA and RCRA, and how to integrate federal regulations with varying state regulations.
  • Ability to present to scientific, regulatory, and public audiences.
  • Ability to succeed in a fast-paced consulting environment, handling multiple project assignments, meeting strict deadlines, and traveling to client facilities as needed.
  • Demonstrated ability to be a self-starter and ability to work independently.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience completing statistical comparisons of site data to background data and completing geochemical evaluation of site data to distinguish site-related contaminants from background constituents.
  • Experience in tasks other than risk assessment (e.g., evaluation of contaminant fate and transport; analytical chemistry; characterization of nature and extent of contamination; development of remediation strategies; etc.) to allow for integration across project teams.
  • Experience designing and leading baseline ecological risk assessments that include the collection of site-specific data such as biota tissue, toxicity testing, bioaccumulation studies, or habitat and/or species surveys.
  • Experience in blood lead modeling to support human health risk assessments.
  • Familiarity with databases (primarily LOCUS) and statistical software.

Required Education

Bachelor's degree in toxicology, environmental science, public health, engineering, or related health or environmental science discipline.

Preferred Education

Advanced degree (MS, MPH, PhD) in toxicology, environmental science, public health, engineering, or related health or environmental science discipline.

Required Qualifications

A pre-hire drug test is required. Some positions may require US Citizenship. It is preferred that the applicant is fully vaccinated
