Introduction
New Horizons Studio (NHS) is a Hyundai Motor Group unit with locations in Bozeman, Montana and Fremont, California. The mission of NHS is to make products for future customers who want or need to travel over terrains which are challenging for traditional ground vehicles. We believe that the combination of robotic technology to car design will lead to ground vehicles of unprecedented mobility. We call these ultimate mobility vehicles or UMV. UMVs are enabled by a diverse range of design concepts and technologies. This role will be based at either our Bozeman, Montana facility or Fremont, California facility.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (but not limited to):
Work closely with engineering staff to design, prototype, and test concepts for robotized suspension technologies. (A robotized suspension system may consist of actuated serial and/or parallel mechanisms and passive mechanical components.)
Assist the engineering team members with design, integration, testing, and troubleshooting of engineering systems.
If applicable, complete an individual project in your discipline relevant to UMV technology.
Perform additional tasks and support in other areas of NHS as needed.
Experience and Skills
Qualifications and Requirements:
Proven technical experience through extracurricular activities, academic projects, passion projects, or equivalent experiences.
Self-starter who is able to handle multiple projects and tasks concurrently.
Deep understanding of one of the following disciplines (Electrical, Mechatronics, Control Systems, Robotics Software):
Electrical:
Proficiency with basic EE tools (multimeters, power supplies, probing PCBAs, reading schematics, etc.).
Familiarity with board level power supplies (e.g., buck, boost, flyback, etc.).
Familiarity with PSpice, KiCad, Altium, or equivalent circuit design software.
Familiar with electrical machines (DC, AC motors).
Mechatronics:
Understanding the fundamentals of electronic and electromechanical systems (microcontrollers, sensors, and actuators).
Proficiency in programming languages such as C/C , Python, MATLAB.
Familiarity with motor control software and tools (Arduino, Simulink).
Understanding common communication protocol such as I2C, SPI, UART.
Comfortable using version control (e.g. Git) on a multi-user project.
Control Systems:
Familiar with dynamics and traditional control techniques (e.g. PID, state feedback, etc.).
Familiar with practical system identification (e.g. chirp, sine-sweep).
Experience with motor control.
Proficient in Matlab/Simulink, C , and/or Python.
Robotics Software:
Familiar with basic computer vision concepts.
Familiar with publisher/subscriber architectures (e.g. ROS, ROS2).
Comfortable working in simulators (e.g. MuJoCo, Simulink/Simscape, Gazebo).
Comfortable developing for a Linux environment.
Proficient in C and/or Python.
Comfortable using version control (e.g. Git) on a multi-user project.
Education and Experience:
Enrolled in a Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, or related engineering discipline.
Rising sophomores and higher are eligible to apply.
