What are the responsibilities and job description for the Power Systems Engineer position at Idaho National Laboratory?

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Power Systems Engineer to work in our Controls department. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our REC facility with every other Friday off. You will report to the senior manager over the Controls department.

Power engineering is the sub-discipline of electrical engineering that deals with power systems, specifically electric power transmission and distribution, power conversion, and electromechanical devices. Power System Engineers contribute to research and development.

Responsibilities Include

  • Select, apply, and integrate engineering principles, theories, concepts, and technologies with complex engineered systems.
  • Prepare and contribute to technical reports, publications, and presentations at national technical meetings and project reviews with program sponsors.
  • Determine or approve the technical approach for the development and testing of engineered solutions using existing or newly created technologies.
  • Develop and implement ideas for project teams to produce proposals for new work including joint projects with industry. Develop physics-based mathematical models of mechanical, chemical, and electrical systems to support and verify design.
  • Collaborate and partner with other government agencies, academia, and private sector companies to achieve project goals.
  • Develop design documentation, maintenance and configuration of power systems, and research and development of advanced power control or measurement techniques.
  • Apply engineering principles to monitor and evaluate condition and operational performance of power infrastructure, recommendation of maintenance standards and procedures, identification of vendor data parts, and planning for upgrades.
  • Research and development activities including the advancement of power measurement or control techniques, such as state estimation or automated metering, for improving the security, efficiency and reliability of the power system infrastructure.
  • Mentor junior staff and look for opportunities to involve them in current projects.
  • Work with program managers, analysts and cyber researchers to develop hardware-centric technical reports, briefings, white papers, strategies and other technical products.
  • Experience with industrial control systems (ICS), and knowledge of vulnerabilities and threats to US and international ICS used across power and multiple critical sectors
  • Work activities may include the development of hands-on training aides that will be used to train and educate
  • Publicly speak to large groups in a training setting.
  • Requires both laboratory and field development, experimentation, and demonstration activities; work safely within these environments including performing as a Principal Researcher.

Minimum Requirements

  • Level 3: Bachelor’s and 6 years of experience or a Master’s and 2 years of experience, or a doctorate and 2 years of relevant experience. Degree must be an ABET accredited engineering degree.
  • Level 4: Bachelor’s and 9 years of experience or a Master’s and 6 years of experience, or a doctorate and 4 years of relevant experience. Degree must be an ABET accredited engineering degree.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have

  • Advanced degree in a directly related field from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • Demonstrated performing independent research and methods development.
  • Demonstrated technical understanding, research collaborations, and professional recognition in relevant field is required. This can be demonstrated through peer-reviewed publications, patents, technical reports, or other forms of professional recognition.
  • Expertise in power systems, data management, and configuration management.
  • Apply expertise in application of principles, theories, and concepts in development of complex power systems.
  • Model and simulation experience, including Real-Time simulation and hardware-in-the-loop testing, is ideal.
  • A Professional Engineering license and Solidworks design experience

Job Information

  • The pay range for this position is: Level 3 ($91,008 - $186,588) / Level 4 ($109,260 - $223,908). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
  • You are required to show a demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working environment.
  • TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.
  • Multi-Level: This is a multi-level posting and you will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on depth and breadth of proven experience and skills.
