It’s an exciting time to work for Idaho Power. What does a Pre-Apprentice Generation Specialist do for us? This is a temporary training position designed to prepare future Generation Specialists for work in a team-based environment. These individuals will learn how to operate hydro plant equipment such as turbines, generators, governors, pumps, air compressors, cranes, and hoists. They work with and assist Generation Specialists in performing preventative and corrective maintenance on the power facilities, buildings, hatcheries, roads, and parks. They ensure necessary generation by performing manual switching and operation in the event of an emergency (i.e., failure of automated generation dispatch systems) while following FERC and other regulations. Pre-Apprentices must demonstrate the aptitude to be promoted to an Apprentice Generation Specialist position. Aptitude will be demonstrated through on-the-job evaluations, skills assessments, and performance evaluations. If aptitude is not sufficiently demonstrated, termination of employment may occur. Pre-Apprentices will be eligible to bid full-time, permanent Apprentice Generation Specialist positions as they become available. If unsuccessful in obtaining an Apprentice position within 24 months of hire, they will be released from employment. REQUIRED SKILLS Knowledge of: Basic electricity and the function, operation, troubleshooting and repair of complex equipment using drawings and instructional manuals Basic math including geometry, trigonometry and algebra Skills in: Operation and/or maintenance of power plants Inspection and maintenance of heavy equipment Basic welding and fabrication Basic computing Basic electrical Personal communication, interactive teamwork, and conflict resolution Ability to: Maintain high productivity with minimal supervision Work with a high degree of accountability Use good judgement and initiative in resolving work problems Perform heavy manual labor in adverse conditions Respond to emergencies in excess of normal working hours and perform other duties/tasks as assigned MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Education: High school diploma or GED Preferred: Associates degree or vocational certification in related area Experience: 1 year demonstrated experience in mechanical, maintenance or construction field with at least 6 months of direct experience in electrical, generation, power plants, mechanical, hydraulic, or welding that provides the desired knowledge, skills, and abilities OR An equivalent combination of education, work experience, or military training Licenses & Certifications: Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS This job will require occasional, physically strenuous work for long periods of time and in adverse conditions. Job requires the ability to bend, stoop, squat, crouch, crawl, climb into and out of vehicles, twist, kneel, balance and reach, and climb multiple flights of stairs. Occasionally lifting items weighing 75 lbs. shoulder height and above; occasionally lifting items weighing up to 100 lbs. waist high and knee high. Occasionally using exertional force up to 50 lbs. to push/pull cable, etc.; Occasionally carrying items weighing up to 100 lbs. with two hands and occasionally carrying items weighing up to 75 lbs. with one hand. Requires the ability to operate a vehicle. Must be able to grasp and hold simple hand tools and testing equipment and use fine motor skills to use a computer keyboard, test equipment, and replace parts. Job placement is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment physical evaluation, the Department of Transportation (DOT) medical certificate exam.
