GALLERY ASSISTANT - PARKS EXHIBITION CENTER
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
The Gallery Assistant will report to and work with the Parks Exhibition Center (PEC) Manager, supporting all aspects of Parks Exhibition Center's summer operations onsite and online at www.IdyllwildArtsGallery.org. Together, the PEC Manager and Gallery Assistant install weekly exhibitions of faculty artwork, as well as the Native American Arts Festival Invitational Exhibition, facilitate sales, and engage with students, faculty, guests of campus and the broader community.
SUMMARY OF DUTIES
The Gallery Assistant will assist with -
- Inventory management, to include basic photography of jewelry and artwork items, description writing, spreadsheet input and import to Parks Exhibition Center's online Square-based website (IdyllwildArtsGallery.org).
- Installation of weekly exhibitions of faculty and guest artist work, including art handling and unpacking, lighting and labeling. Adjust gallery installation as items are sold or returned.
- Coordination with visiting artists to receive and return incoming and outgoing consignments.
- Interactions with guests - greet all visitors, maintain a knowledge of artwork on display and assist with all inquiries to engage and process sales of work.
- Clean jewelry cases daily. Secure and lock the gallery and display cases after business hours.
- Recording and tracking sales through Square, inventory tracking and weekly deposits; processing check requests for guest artist consigned sales.
- Photographing exhibitions and items on display for promotional and archival purposes.
- Preparing artwork for shipment, including proper packaging.
- Setup and hosting of gallery lectures, demonstrations, receptions and other events.
- Other duties as assigned by the Parks Exhibition Center Manager.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- High School graduate; with at least two years of college or equivalent experience.
- Prior knowledge of installation procedures for the hanging and display of a wide variety of artwork in an exhibition setting.
- Proficient in the handling and packing of valuable items.
- Prior experience in use of basic tools
- Basic experience in digital photography.
- Excellent customer service skills, previous retail and/or gallery experience preferred.
- Experience in point-of-sale systems, such as Square and/or website management (will train if no prior experience)
- Proficiency in digital applications, including Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Forms)
- Must have the ability to lift and carry objects up to 30 lbs, including bulky items
- Strong organizational skills with a responsible, self-motivated outlook and the ability to work with a variety of people including faculty, students, staff and the general public.
PAY
The Parks Exhibition Center Assistant works June 3 - August 3, 2022 with meals and housing included. Summer staff members are classified as hourly employees by the IRS and the State of California with an expectation of 40 hours per week, and will include night hours and weekends. Federal and state taxes are withheld from all paychecks.
