Position Overview
The Illinois Department of Corrections at Taylorville Correctional Center is seeking a self-motivated and task-oriented candidate to fill the role of Corrections Grounds Supervisor. The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of lawncare and its maintenance, as well as experience planning, preparing, and maintaining gardens and/or flower beds. This position would be ideal for someone who enjoys working outdoors and maintaining a well-groomed lawn and grounds. All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.
Job Responsibilities
1. Supervises individuals-in-custody in the maintenance of lawns and drives consisting of trees, shrubbery, planting and maintaining flower beds, as well as, the institutional garden, watering, fertilizing, mowing grass, hedge trimming, tree pruning, and removal, pickup, and disposal of trash, snow removal, etc.
2. Plans and lays out flower beds requiring conditioning and digging of flower beds, transplanting flower plants, fertilizing, watering and the maintenance of beds during the season.
3. Monitors and directs maintenance of walks, ditches, watersheds, facility exterior signs and roadways around the institution.
4. Monitors and directs the operation of landscaping and maintenance of institution grounds.
5. Operates and directs the use of power equipment such as power mowers, tractors, weed eaters, and snowplows used in the maintenance of institution and grounds.
6. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of high school.
2. Requires two (2) years of experience in grounds maintenance and gardening.
Conditions of Employment
- Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
- Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of the position held, is prohibited.
- Requires completion of an approved course in guard training within six months of employment.
- Applicants are required to abide by all vaccine and/or other medical standards as set out by the employer.
