The Correctional Shift Supervisor position serves as a supervisor in IDOC facilities and is a vital position for the custody, control, and safety of all IDOC facilities. The ideal candidate should be able to manage issues and concerns of staff and individuals in custody to facilitate effective operations of the facility. We encourage all staff that meet the minimum requirements to apply for the Correctional Shift Supervisor position.
Essential Function 1
Plans, coordinates and directs a security force in housing and custodial services on an assigned shift.
- Coordinates and directs security inspections.
- Checks and monitors buildings.
- Monitors corrections sanitation problems in housing units and towers and other assigned locations.
- Schedules shake -downs of housing units.
- Organizes and participates in quarterly escape drills.
- Maintains integrity of perimeter security systems.
- Monitors the mailroom activities.
Essential Function 2
Serves as full-line supervisor.
- Assigns and reviews work.
- Provides guidance and training to assigned staff.
- Counsels staff regarding work performance.
- Reassigns staff to meet day-to-day operating needs.
- Establishes annual goals and objectives.
- Approves time off.
- Adjusts first level grievances.
- Effectively recommends and imposes discipline up to and including discharge.
- Prepares and signs performance evaluations.
- Determines and recommends staffing need reviews activity reports.
Essential Function 3
Coordinates security for vocational, education/treatment, activity-based programs.
- Makes recommendations to provide optimum safety of individuals in custody and staff.
- Determines personnel needs of each shift.
- Directs placement and assignment office.
- Provides signature approval for individual in custody assignments.
- Reviews segregation placement of individuals in custody.
- Implements policies and procedures.
Essential Function 4
Receives, reviews and approves Roster Master sheets for shift assignments.
- Conducts roll-call.
- Communicates special problems experienced with individuals in custody, emergency measures which need to be taken, operation or policy concerns and other relevant information experienced during shift.
- Documents late arrival, early departure and absent staff.
- Makes adjustments.
- Announces new assignments.
- Completes roll call sign in sheets with documentation and submits to appropriate party.
- Monitors staff rotation ensuring team structure, staff development concerns, etc.
- Provides information to management in creating 90-day Master Roster.

Participates in clinical, professional, administrative meetings.
- Attends conferences.
- Discuss and reports problems and issues with immediate supervisor.
- Works with investigatory and law enforcement agencies.
- Acts as duty warden addressing issues which arise.
