IYT is an AmeriCorps partner organization serving 3,000 members across more than 60 sites in Sacramento County, Humboldt, Central Valley, Bay Area and college students across the nation.
Position Overview
Under the supervision of a Program Manager, the Mentor Specialist will provide on-site mentorship and educational services for up to 100 young men of color attending middle school and/or high school for the 2022-2023 academic school year.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a Lead Mentor at 2 to 3 sites, maintaining one on one and small group mentoring sessions for up to 100 middle and high school students with the goal being to provide academic, emotional, and mental support (mentorship)
- Assist in the after school program as needed
- Support and/or conduct Saturday and off-site programming, college tours and field trips
- Participate in monthly professional development sessions
- Organize, input and maintain student data through salesforce
- Deliver or Present student development workshops (including college advising, civic engagement, life skills, etc.)
- Teach A-G understanding to all students (mentorship)
- Weekly communication with parents/guardians in regards to the student's academic, emotional, and mental growth (mentorship follow-up)
- Provide a space for individuals and groups for A-G academic support (after school)
- Support Program Manager on/off-site as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned
Desired Qualifications
- Believe in the mission, vision and values of Improve Your Tomorrow, Inc.
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution or in the process of attaining
- Minimum 1-2 years required working directly with young men of color, preferably in an academic setting.
- Excellent communication skills (both written and oral) with demonstrated ability to speak and write clearly and persuasively
- Strong interpersonal skills that inspire and motivate others to action
Schedule
Monday-Friday, 8:30am-5pm, some weekends, evenings and organization-wide events are required.
Compensation
This is a full-time, non-exempt position with a salary of $17.00 and $20.92 per hour commensurate with experience. Benefits include 2 weeks accrued vacation and 3 paid weeks off per school breaks. This position is contingent per the availability of funds and resources and is not guaranteed beyond one year of employment.
Work Location
This position is based in Tracy, Ca. and will require to travel between up to 2-3 school sites on a weekly basis. Reliable transportation is required.
Requirement
Clearance from background checks is required for employment, with fingerprinting expense covered by employer.
