The Department of Philosophy has been part of the curriculum at Indiana University since its founding in 1820. As a department in the College of Arts and Sciences, our department emphasizes independent thought, rigor, self-reflection, and the application of reason to every problem, large and small. Job Summary
Department Specific Responsibilities
- Processes email and phone requests for the department
- Answers questions from all venues through networking with University Departments & Offices along with outside agencies
- Assists with workflow in the office and with departmental projects as needed.
- Attends mandatory training sessions, informational workshops, and meetings
- Maintains internal office equipment including printer and copier
- Greets visitors to the department and answers questions they may have
- Assists Office Staff with Invited Speakers and other events
- Manages incoming and outgoing mail
- Distributes office supplies to faculty and graduate students and maintains supply levels
- Processes orders for office and teaching supplies, books, and promotional items at the direction of Office staff
- Maintains bulletin boards in the hallways
- Prepares and maintains office Hours list each semester
- Creates and maintain department signage, including purchasing faculty nameplates
- Maintains and updates website, periodically checks for outdated information, currency of links, missing information; respond to requests from faculty, staff, DGS, DUS, DGA and Chair for changes and corrections.
- Updates the departmental intranet to keep documents current, including departmental policies, course schedules and AI assignments each semester, takes minutes for department faculty meetings and other committee meetings, etc.
- Manages room reservations for SY 022 & 120, online, for professors, Associate Instructors, and graduate students.
- Proofreads and uploads course descriptions – October for Spring semester / March for Fall semester.
- Creates semester course brochures and distribute electronic and hard copies
- Assists in editing the department newsletter
- Maintains department events calendar
- Distributes department keys and maintains key record
- Creates CITO (technology) and Facility Operations help requests as needed
- Helps maintain, review, and update department records as directed by the ASPM.
- Supports annual merit review process
- Supports the Graduate Coordinator by preparing a spreadsheet with data on applicants for the Admissions Committee
Qualifications
EDUCATION
Required
- High School Diploma or GED.
Preferred
- Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree.
SKILLS
Required
- Ability to resolve problems and handle situations with care, diplomacy, and confidentiality.
- Proficient usingMicrosoft Office programs, particularly Word and Excel.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Work Hours
This role is a part-time temp hourly position which will work 15-20 hours per week. Shift times will be worked out with supervisor.
