Job Summary


Department Specific Responsibilities

  • Prepares the work areas to protect students, guests, and building patrons while working in high traffic public areas.
  • Communicates with clients about the work to be performed, scheduling, and expectations during and at the completion of the work conducted.
  • Works independently and with little direct supervision
  • Works as part of a maintenance facilities team and may assist with larger building maintenance projects.
  • Interacts with students, faculty, staff, and visitors in a positive and friendly manner in all situations.

General Responsibilities

  • Applies paints, primers, stains and finishes to interior and exterior surfaces (walls, ceilings, staircases, equipment, etc.).
  • Prepares coating materials by tinting, toning, matching and blending to obtain desired color or consistency; mix in various additives such as retardants, hardeners, drying agents, etc.
  • Prepares surfaces to accept finishes by patching holes, cracks and joints with caulk, putty, plaster or other filler; strips, scrapes, sands or power washes to remove old finish and clean surface.
  • Strips, sands, seals and finishes doors, furniture, woodwork, trim and flooring.
  • Removes graffiti; removes, repairs and installs wall coverings. May perform stenciling and dado work.
  • Erects scaffolding in safe manner according to site conditions.
  • Performs other general building maintenance as assigned.
  • May supervise hourly workers.

EDUCATION

Required

  • High school diploma or GED

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • 2 years verifiable painting experience

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Required

  • Possess a valid driver's license and ability to be insured by Indiana University Upon date of hire
  • Some positions may require certification to erect and disassemble scaffolding. Some positions may require fork lift certification.

  • Ability to safely use solvents, cleaners, abrasives and other materials that may pose health hazards to the user and others in the vicinity.
  • Ability to calculate proper amounts of materials and equipment to complete projects.
  • Knowledge of standard painting and finishing application procedures.
  • Knowledge of lead abatement practices preferred (may be required for some positions).
  • Ability to use a computer
  • Ability to work with wide variety of cultures and backgrounds.

Working Conditions / Demands


This role requires the ability to remain in a stationary position as well as the ability to move about the workplace for long durations. It requires effective communication, the ability to operate machinery, tools, and controls. The role requires the ability to ascend/descend ladders/stairs, and to position one's self in low level positions, detect a variety of chemicals and/or gases. The role requires the ability to ascend to rooftops and move in tight spaces to perform and complete inspections. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
