Job Description
Job Summary:

The roll operator is in charge of operating the rolling machine that manipulates various materials into different shapes, such as sheets, cylinders, or cones. The operator utilizes a control panel to operate the machine, which rolls the steel plate to flatten or shape it depending on the job requirements. Most of their day involves feeding the material back and forth into the machine, as well as adjusting settings according to specifications. The Roll Operator continually monitors the quality and flatness/shape of the product throughout the process. While the tasks of a roll operator may be repetitive, this role entails a strong knowledge of geometry, rolling machinery, and the physical properties of the material they are manipulating.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Operates plate rolling machines (3 and 4 roll) to form metal plates, sheets, or bars into arcs, cylinders, or cones, using blueprints and templates.
• Loads the sheets, plates, bars, etc. into rolls by hand or with overhead crane.
• Adjusts the rolling machines as needed for material thickness and required diameters.
• Understanding of different material properties and potential machine limitations due to material properties.
• Ensure optimal performance of the equipment.
• Always work safely to prevent on-the-job injuries following all safety regulations.
• Communicate directly with team members to maximize productivity and efficiency.
• Observes machine operation to detect workpiece defects or machine malfunction.
• Ensure correct measures workpiece dimensions to determine accuracy of machine operation.
• Ensure all work referenced above is completed at an acceptable productivity level for employee's classification and experience level.
• Ability to operate a forklift.
• Ability to work alone.
• Knowledge of rigging
• May operate other machines (saws, brakes, etc.)
• Other sheet metal shop duties as assigned by shop foremen.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Must be able to stand for long periods of time. Continual use of hands, considerable arms, and legs as well as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling materials.
• Must be able to lift and maneuver 50 lbs. without physical restrictions.
• Must always wear appropriate PPE such as safety glasses, welding helmets, hearing protection, gloves, and safety toe boots.
• Able to work in hot and cold environments during summer and winter months.

PREFERRED SKILLS

• Strong Knowledge of geometry, rolling machinery, and the physical properties of the material they are manipulating.
• Must have the ability to read blueprints, layout parts to print, form to print.
• Ability to understand and follow standard work.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

• 1-2 years of experience forming components to standard tolerances.
• High School/GED diploma preferred but not required.
• Able to work overtime if needed.
