What are the responsibilities and job description for the Shelter Worker position at Innovative Emergency Mgmt?
IEM is looking to form a cadre of Shelter Workers to fill our clients’ growing desires for mass care and shelter management initiatives in communities across the country. Are you looking for a job that gives you a strong sense of passion, meaning and purpose?
Currently, we have an immediate need for Shelter Workers; this will require flexibility in your work hours as shifts can be day shifts, mid shifts, and overnight shifts. Hours in all cases, will be capped at a maximum of 60 hours per week and no more than 12 hours worked in a day. Personnel will be scheduled to accommodate these mandatory limits and can anticipate working between 40-60 hours a week depending on scheduling and the needs of the client.
Like other cadre members of this type, your employment is dependent on the needs of our clients; we are activating this team for Full Time employment until the client needs are met and once deactivated this role will become Part Time with limited hours (Under 20 weekly). Once reactivated you must have the ability and willingness to start full time within 24-72 hours of notification to do so.
Primary Location:
- Candidates must originate from Los Angeles, California as job sites will be in Los Angeles, California and the surrounding area
- This position will require work to be conducted onsite and will require work on some weekends/holidays in excess of 40 hours per week with Over Time Pay.
- Jobs sites are subject to change or be added based on client needs and continued employment requires you to be able to work on site.
Travel Requirements:
- Must be available and willing to travel to multiple locations within the project location and deal with multiple daily work scenarios, thinking quickly on your feet to get the tasks done in a professional manner.
Essential Functions:
- Must be able to work long hours in physically demanding work environments, with long periods of time walking, assisting others, and lifting materials.
- Must be willing to work any shifts including days, nights, swing shifts, weekends, holidays, and others as required to meet the needs of the mission.
- Must be very detail-oriented, take instruction from supervisorial staff, and ready and willing to join a high-tempo team.
- Ideal Candidates will have a proven track record of multiple deployments in high-tempo, high-stress environments such as emergency response operations, sheltering operations, and other related incident response relief efforts.
- Flexibility is a must.
- Always maintain professional composure under high-tempo duty assignments and deadlines.
Current Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Experience in working with populations at-risk, such as refugees, unaccompanied minors, and families seeking asylum status.
- Ability to think and analyze very quickly, follow instruction, and perform the mission in sometimes ambiguous, fluid, rapidly changing scenarios to meet mission requirements.
Minimum Qualifications:
- 1 year in customer service and/or busy, high operational tempo work environments.
- Able to handle both mental and physical job requirements such as using computers, phone applications, and dealing with the public.
- Ability to lift up to 50lbs and be on your feet for extended periods of time.
- Completed FEMA Independent Study Course IS-100c
- Have a HS Diploma or GED.
- Have a current and valid Driver's License.
- Must not pose a direct threat or significant risk of substantial harm to the safety or health of himself/herself or others.
- Must be able to pass a Child Abuse background check, and all applicable state and federal criminal background checks.
- Must be eligible to work in the United States.
- Must provide proof of work eligibility status upon request.

- Associates Degree
- Proven track record of multiple deployments in high-tempo, high-stress environments such as emergency response operations, sheltering operations, and other related incident response relief efforts.
