What are the responsibilities and job description for the Navigator position at InsideHigherEd?

Student Success Navigators (SSNs) have a unique role at Miami University, providing individualized, holistic support for undergraduate students who are in the exploratory stage of their college experience.

Working with students to explore their options, Student Success Navigators serve students at the intersections of multiple domains including major exploration, course selection, financial, emotional, and social health, and academic performance.

SSNs support students who are exploring majors and assist them in progressing toward any degree at Miami. SSNs are highly competent, rigorously trained professionals who prioritize student well-being, centering authentic relationships in every interaction.

Our mission is to assist students in obtaining a rich and meaningful college experience.

SSNs provide individualized coaching and support for Miami University undergraduate students, starting with learning each student’s story, identifying their personal and academic strengths and challenges, and respectfully assisting them as they plan for their success.

Our work with students is fundamentally student-driven, affirming each individual’s capacity for self-direction, personal development, and growth.

SSNs explore students’ motivation through self-reflection, and assist students in building appropriate help-seeking and self-advocacy behaviors, empowering them to make informed decisions about their academic path.

Once students have decided on a major, SSNs provide support as they transition to their academic division’s Academic Advising program.

Required : Master’s degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling, or closely related field, by date of appointment.

  • Consideration may be given to candidates for SSN with demonstrated ability to utilize relationship care-taking techniques to ensure continued engagement with students and campus partners;
  • demonstrated decision-making skills that allow for quick, informed, and appropriate decisions essential to understanding students’ needs and identifying where and how those needs can be met;
  • energy, empathy, listening skills, and a desire to work in an innovative position that requires proactive and student-centered approaches;
  • with an understanding of higher education retention, advising, and student development theories; experience working with students as a tutor, intervention specialist, educational learning specialist, or equivalent position;
  • experience teaching at the college level; experience with Banner, Navigate, and other predictive analytics and SIS systems;
  • ability to creatively develop student success strategies based on data; capacity to learn and understand technology / software programs;

experience working in a proactive advising / support area; proactive in on-going personal development, including advancing self-knowledge, appropriate self-critique, and self-affirmation.
