SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the general direction of the President, the Dean of Students is responsible directs and oversees the following Student Life Programs: Comprehensive housing program for on-and-off campus students, student counseling program, student transportation services, student activities program, Associated Student Government and student clubs/organization programs to meet the needs of the IAIA student community.  Supports the mission of the Institute and serves on Institutional Committees as needed.


ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS

•Directs, manages and supervises the Dean of Students Office and all programs reporting to this office.

•Directs and Oversees a therapeutic student counseling program.

•Ensures and implements due process for student infractions in accordance with the policies/guidelines of the student rules and regulations manual.

•Develops and maintains the divisional strategic plans.

•Develops and maintains the department budget.

•Seeks fundraising opportunities for the Center for Student Life. 

•Interview and recommend for appointment, train, supervise, evaluate and direct staff under supervision.

•Conduct regular staff meetings to inform, direct and motivate staff.

•Provides staff development for the Student Life Division staff.

•Develops and updates the rules and regulations manual (Student Handbook) on an annual basis and makes recommendations to the President; involving both on-and off-campus students in the process.

•Ensures the physical maintenance of the residential hall with the facilities operations concerning health and safety requirements on a regular basis.  Reports needed services to appropriate offices.

•Maintains a list of current off-campus housing availability for those students who choose to live off-campus.

•Supervises the student transportation program for activity field trips, Indian Health Services and local transportation.

•Must drive a government vehicle and meet the requirements this entails as part of their regular duties.

•Supervises a therapeutic counseling program. 

•Supervises extra-curricular, artistic, cultural and socially relevant recreational activities for weekends or week nights.

•Plans, coordinates and collaborates organized activities with other IAIA departments, programs and student organizations for both on-and off-campus students. 

•Manages emergency and crisis situations pertaining to students and campus life.

•Other duties as assigned.


Requirements

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

•Master’s Degree preferred or a bachelor’s degree with extensive experience in social work, counseling, psychology or relevant field.  Four (4) years of broad professional level work in the administration of student programs, preferably with Native American students.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

•Knowledge of the principles and techniques of student counseling and student housing program development.

•Knowledge of student support programs and services.

•Ability to work with students effectively

•Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.  

•Knowledge of applicable legislation, standards, policies and procedures within specialty area.

•Knowledge of crisis intervention techniques.

•Skill in budget preparation and fiscal management.

•Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.

•Understanding and sensitivity to American Indian cultures.

•Ability to interact positively with local, regional, national and tribal personnel, agencies and organizations.

•Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with all levels and with all people and groups.

•Ability to interact and work successfully with faculty, students and staff as related to job responsibilities.

•Ability to resolve conflicts in a constructive manner.

•Adheres to appropriate standards of conduct and ethics, including confidentiality, integrity and honesty; follows directives; exhibits ability to adapt to changing work environments; cooperates and works respectfully with others; participates in pro-active problem solving; regularly attends job duties, and participates in meeting as required. Refrains from engaging in rumors.

•Must have a pleasant, courteous, and professional attitude and presence.

•Ability to work independently, to begin projects independently (or as assigned), and to bring projects (or assignments) to conclusion on a timely basis.

•Employee development and performance management skills.

•Knowledge of word processing and computer capabilities.


WORKING CONDITIONS

Occasional out-of-town travel for meetings and conferences using a personal vehicle or company vehicle.
