Only experience and education obtained by 06/17/2021 will be considered.
In order to qualify for this position you must possess both the Basic Education Requirement and Minimum Qualification.
Basic Education Requirement--You must submit Transcripts to verify that you meet this requirement
Basic Requirement:
- Degree: zoology, wildlife management, or an appropriate field of biology that included at least 9 semester hours in zoology; 6 semester hours in such wildlife courses as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, or wildlife management; and 3 semester hours in botany, and 3 semester hours in conservation biology. OR
- Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in one of the fields described in A above that included at least 9 semester hours in zoology; 6 semester hours in such wildlife courses as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, or wildlife management; and 3 semester hours in botany, and 3 semester hours in conservation biology, plus appropriate experience or additional education. OR
- Previously occupied a position in the GS-0485 series prior to December 3, 2010, and meet the basic education requirement of the previous qualification standard. Previous standard: bachelor or higher degree with major in zoology, wildlife management, or an appropriate field of biology, that includes 9 semester hours in zoology; 6 semester hours in wildlife; and 9 semester hours in botany. NOTE: To qualify under this option, you must submit a copy of your SF-50 (Personnel Action), dated prior to Dec 3, 2010, showing that you held a position in the GS-0485 series.
Minimum Qualification [GS-05]
There is no additional requirement for the GS-5 level.
You may qualify at the GS-07 level, if you fulfill one of the following qualification requirements:
- Completion of a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree in a field of study that demonstrates the competencies required by this position with either (1) a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 based on a 4.0 scale; (2) a 3.5 GPA based on a 4.0 scale for all required courses completed in a qualifying major field of study at either the time of application or during the last two years of your undergraduate curriculum; (3) class standing of upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or a major subdivision of the college; or, (4) membership in a National Scholastic Honor Society certified by the Association of College Honor Societies, excluding freshman honor societies; OR
- One full year of graduate level education in an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in one of the following related fields: fish and wildlife biology, conservation biology, or similar field directly related to the position. The education must demonstrate the competencies necessary to do the work of the position; OR
- One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service gathering and evaluating biological data, communicating and negotiating biological issues and planning and executing biological responsibilities; OR
- A combination of education and experience as listed above that when combined, equals 100% of the total requirement

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Responsibilities:
As a Wildlife Refuge Specialist your duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Performing routine day-to-day assignments of a technical biological nature that are required for the effective and efficient operation and support biological support programs and services of the assigned Refuge/Wetland Management District.-Participating in the development of Comprehensive Conservation Plans, Habitat Management Plans, Land Acquisition and Protection Plans, and other similar actions.-Participating and assisting in various phases of administration, yearly work program planning and implementation, preparation of program schedules, work schedules, and maintenance of statistical records reflecting work accomplishments and activities, reports, and planning.
- Physical and work environment: The work requires some physical exertion such as walking over wet, rough, uneven, or marshy surfaces; bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities; and recurring lifting of moderately heavy items weighing up to 50 pounds. Work requires above average agility and dexterity.
