Afghan Newspaper Editor

The ideal candidate has a strong interest in promoting Afghan news and culture. Candidates must be able to demonstrate a strong sense of news judgment. The editor will prepare stories for publication that maximizes reader understanding and engagement. The editor will ensure clarity and accuracy, create exciting headlines, and improve a story's presentation. Experience in editing is desired, but we are willing to train and encourage applicants with a strong interest in journalism to apply. Responsibilities:

• Perform extensive copyediting and proofreading of submitted articles and other content for readability, clarity, accuracy, and grammar in English, Farsi and Pashto
• Review content to ensure correctness, consistency, and completeness.
• Recognize and recommend changes or clarification for issues of questionable accuracy, inadequate research, or unclear meaning
• Create and work with ideas and leads to further the goals and vision of the newspaper
• Promote thoughtful and engaging content in a professional manner
• Recruit and coordinate volunteer contributors for publications.
• Oversees and produces, from concept to completion, a broad array of digital and/or print promotional and communication materials for the organization.
• Ensures that all materials present a clear, unified, and positive image for the organization.
• Plans, prepares, and distributes original promotional content such as articles, news and press releases, email, blog and social media posts, and other updates on behalf of the organization.
• Promotes and attends special events and functions; promotes and reports on organization milestones and activities such as projects, services, and community activities.
• Arranges for photography and/or press coverage for special events.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, Farsi, Pashto.
• Extremely proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and desktop publishing software.
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Excellent organizational, strategic planning, and time management skills
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment to meet necessary deadlines
• Problem-solving skills to overcome challenges
• Experience with editing and writing tools, including Adobe Suite and Microsoft Suite
• Be able to work individually and in a team
• Able to work in a multicultural workplace.
• Knowledgeable in Afghan culture and St. Louis community

Education and Experience:

• Bachelors degree in related field required.
• Three years of experience in journalism, publications, or a related field preferred
