Job Description
Primary Function of Position:
The Biomechanical Research Associate is a scientific and research resource working with both internal and external stakeholders to research, develop, and enhance Intuitive training models used by surgeons and clinicians for training on the da Vinci surgical system or Ion robotic pulmonary catheter system. The Research Associate works cross-collaboratively within the organization to drive research priorities by designing, executing, and analyzing unique experiments, aiding in the development of training models fit for emerging clinical uses, and enhancing existing models to better meet the needs of surgeon training.
Intuitive’s Advanced Tissue Model group is responsible to developing and producing models used by Intuitive to train surgeons and pulmonologists on basic technology training of the da Vinci or Ion robotic system. Models are also used in surgeon-led courses to teach use of the device, including procedures for general surgery, thoracic surgery, gynecology, and urology.
Roles & Responsibilities:
- Work closely with the Advanced Tissue Models Research and Development (R&D) team to construct prototype tissue models and incorporate iterative changes during the development process based on internal and external feedback.
- Document the details of prototype model assembly and work closely with the trainer and engineering team to develop all necessary documentation for eventual transfer of the prototype model to production.
- Teach the production trainer the know-how and specifics of model assembly when ready to transition from prototype model to production model.
- Work closely with other members of the Advanced Tissue Models R&D team to ensure the lab spaces are stocked and organized.
- Work with surgeons and other clinicians at Intuitive as well as researchers at hospitals and medical schools.
- Serve as a primary research resource aiding in the development, implementation, and analysis of experimental protocols.
- Serve as a subject matter expert on material science and use of synthetic hydrogels, biologic tissue, and/or synthetic material within surgical simulation training, leading projects on researching, developing, and incorporating novel materials (synthetic or biologic) within advanced tissue models.
