Job Summary:
The primary focus of the Lifeguard position will be to monitor aquatic activity and ensure a safe environment at the 197 District Aquatic Center. Lifeguards will oversee multiple swim activities including but not limited to swim lessons, open swim events, water exercise programs, lap swimming and various rental activities throughout the calendar year.
Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions:
- Monitor swimmers in the pool to ensure their personal safety and compliance with all district standards of health and safety. Maintain strict enforcement of pool rules in a polite and courteous manner.
- Inspect the facility on a daily basis and report unsafe conditions, cleanliness concerns, equipment and maintenance issues to supervisor and/or head lifeguard so that a safe and healthy environment is maintained.
- Know, understand, and consistently communicate policies and guidelines for the pool to participants.
- Ensures swimmers are aware of potentially dangerous swim areas and activities.
- Maintain constant surveillance of the pool, know/review all emergency procedures and respond to emergency situations immediately.
- Ability to recognize and respond calmly and effectively in hazardous/dangerous situations.
- Perform first aid when necessary and complete appropriate incident/accident reports. Demonstrated ability to recognize swimmers in need of assistance/distress. Demonstrated ability to recognize, respond and remedy unsafe situations.
- Ability to communicate and work with all ages and levels of swimmers. Interact regularly with supervisors, staff, volunteers, and participants.
- Participate in regular in-service training sessions.
Minimum Qualifications:
Age 15
Licensing and Other Requirements: Must maintain certifications throughout employment with District 197
- Current Red Cross Certification in Lifeguarding
- Current First Aid/CPR/AED Certification
Physical Requirements Required for the Job:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of a Lifeguarding job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential job functions.
- Be able to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue, including swimming quickly, supporting adult body weight while swimming as far as 50 feet, and removing adult body weight from the water.
- Communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations.
- Ability to concentrate and remain alert for long periods of time without lapse in concentration in a hot and humid environment.
- Must be able to sit and stand for long periods of time during shifts.
- Must be able to also kneel, climb, bend, crawl, reach for objects, grasp, push, pull and lift objects weighing up to 25 pounds to set up/close down the pool deck for a shift.
- Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere in the zone of responsibility, with or without reasonable accommodations.
- See and observe all sections of an assigned zone of responsibility, with or without reasonable accommodations.
