Job Requirements: | ETS's Research & Development division is seeking a creative and innovative individual to serve as User Experience Designer in the ETS AI Labs. The ETS AI Labs are user-obsessed across all phases of research and development and focus on prototyping adaptive and personalized learning product concepts with compelling user interfaces and AI-enhanced experiences. Prototypes will be built on a foundation of learning and cognitive science principles that leverage interactive task design, machine learning, and data sciences to be integrated in various teaching, learning, and assessment solutions. Position Summary: The User Experience (UX) Designer will work in a cross-functional team of researchers and scientists to (a) identify target market and user segments (b) engage with users in interviews, observations, focus groups and other data collection activities to understand their needs and lead the UI/UX aspects of interface design, wireframing, and documentation for engaging, interactive, and innovative capabilities, (c) Implement best practices for user experience design and (d) collaborate with both internal and external colleagues and consultants to ensure on-time completion of project goals. Responsibilities: Apply design thinking and user-centered research and design principles to prototypes and product concepts developed in the AI Research Labs. Facilitate ideation and workshop sessions with internal teams and target user groups. Engage with users of target market and user segments to conduct visioning activities, needs assessments, validation of problem statements, and ongoing testing through the development lifecycle. Contribute appropriate questions to user protocols to elicit feedback to help advance designs. Use collected information to translate ideas from users/clients (e.g., students, teachers, international learners, higher education institutions) into engaging, accessible, and highly usable designs through audience and needs analyses, user interview, journey maps, etc. Lead all design-related tasks in an iterative design process. Work with research scientists, learning scientists, data scientists, instructional designers, software developers, and product owners in cross-functional agile teams to support the efficient and effective development of AI-enabled product concepts and prototypes. Define Information Architecture through creation of website structure, navigation, hierarchies and categorizations that allow users to understand where they are, and where the information they want is in relation to their current position. Collaborate with researchers, scientists, and outside consultants as needed, to ensure that the finished product adheres to the design goals and conforms to ETS AI Labs technical, accessibility, and architectural standards. Communicate necessary design requirements to developers. Present actionable insights to a cross-functional team and stakeholders in a story-telling format. Possess excellent organizational skills to prioritize workload across several projects, whilst maintaining strong attention to detail. Keep abreast of the trends and latest research in human computer interaction and related fields. Remain current with usability and/or accessibility guidelines that change with evolving technologies. Experience and Skills Education, Certifications, or Special Licenses: A BA/BS or MA in Human-Computer Interaction, Computer Science, Learning Sciences, Cognitive Science, or related field is required. Relevant Years of Experience: At least 5 years of professional experience in the UX design and/or evaluation of technology-based user experiences (e.g., usability, accessibility, graphic/information design). Required Experience and Skills: Experience engaging with target market and user segments to understand their needs and aligning solutions with those needs. Experience assisting in client requirements-gathering sessions, usability testing, and design presentations is required, as is some experience in storyboarding and building interactive prototypes. Experience with both interaction design and interface design. Experience designing mobile-first and desktop solutions. Complete fluency with design software, Sketch, Figma, InVision, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar tools. Ability to work collaboratively and effectively in agile teams and with cross-divisional stakeholder groups. Strong oral and written communication skills. Curiosity and willingness to ask questions and challenge assumptions. Experience working with AI, ed-tech, teaching and learning, and/or language learning a plus. |
