The Residence Life Coordinator position is responsible for aiding in the day to day operations in housing.   The Residence Life Coordinator is expected to enhance the living environment of the community through staff development, resident outreach and creative student programming.  This position shall work in collaboration with the Residence Life  staff, and Vice President of Finance.  

 

This position requires living in Campus View in a one-bedroom apartment provided by the College.  Fire code limits the apartment occupancy to two individuals.  College policies prohibit individuals under the age of 18 from living in Campus View.   A meal allowance is also included.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.   Other duties may be assigned.

 

  1. Assisting the Director of Residence Life  and the Assistant Director of Residence Life in the day-to-day operations of Student Housing.
  2. Take part in the hiring process, train and supervise Student Resident Assistants (RAs), Student Desk Assistants (DAs), and other student employees.
  3. Work with the Director of Residence Life and Assistant Director of Residence Life to organize and facilitate student activities for resident and non-resident students.
  4. Create, administer, and deliver programs, activities, and services to meet needs of residential students. Develop, facilitate and support education and social programming. Promote supportive student residence environment.
  5. Oversight of the RA programming model to ensure that quality social and educational programs are occurring.  Assessment, planning and evaluation of all RA programming.
  6. Create, administer, and deliver programs, activities, and services to meet needs of residential students. Promote supportive student residence environment.  
  7. Work with Campus Safety and Security in regards to needs in campus housing.
  8. Be familiar with campus and community resources and utilize them for referring problems beyond the scope and experience of the Director.
  9. Handle emergency or crisis situations according to policy as they arise and apply conflict resolution skills.  
  10. Work in concert with the Business Office to establish and collect on accounts, notify students of delinquent accounts and/or changes in housing occupancy.
  11. Required to provide on-call and on-duty coverage to address safety and security concerns in campus housing. Assist with additional on-call responsibilities during high volume times such as move-in, move-out, opening and closing of housing for semester breaks.  Hours need to be clearly communicated on a weekly basis based on nights on call and obligations relating to the position.    
  12. Serve as liaison to facilities and custodial staff.   Report, track, and follow-up on facility issues to ensure timely solutions.  .
  13. Perform weekly building walk-throughs to ensure building safety and security.
  14. Support student conduct efforts and serve as a judicial hearing officer for Student Housing.  Address inappropriate behavior of students and in following due process, determine fair and appropriate sanctions.
  15. Be familiar with and enforce rules and regulations of the College and Student Housing
  16. Communicate as needed with parents and guardians of residents, follow FERPA regulations, and make conduct and counseling referrals as appropriate.
  17. Develop, maintain and continuously improve the residence-life program.
  18. Responsible for understanding, supporting and actively demonstrating the College’s beliefs, values, mission and vision and being in agreement to be evaluated by same.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has supervisory responsibilities for Student Resident Assistants and for student employees.


CONTACTS AND PURPOSE OF CONTACTS

 

Internal:          Frequent contact in an information sharing capacity with faculty, staff and students, especially in departments like Student Life and Athletics, Security, Student Services, Facilities Operations, Marketing, and Cultural Affairs.

 

External:         Regular contact with students and community members in a service-provider capacity, providing information and problem solving.  Communicate with JC stakeholders.

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field and relative experience working in campus housing and student activities.  Knowledge of supervisory practices and principles, general knowledge of crisis intervention strategies and skill in communicating effectively with individuals from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds are needed. Possess a strong understanding and commitment to student development.

Computer Skills

Knowledge of personal computers and software including word processing, spreadsheets and Datatel.  Must demonstrate ongoing proficiency in computer use and reporting activities. 

Customer Service

Demonstrates proactive communication and customer service strategies that align with JC’s institutional values.  Demonstrates competency and effective strategies for conflict resolution and de-escalation.

Language Skills

Excellent communication skills, including both written and verbal skills. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.   Ability to write routine reports, action plans, and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of Jackson College.   Good command of grammar.


Mathematical Skills

Ability to calculate addition and subtraction and to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.


Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
