JVS provides a broad range of services including adult education, skills training, job readiness training, job placement and support, and access to post-secondary education. JVS assists employers in their search for well-qualified job applicants and their initiatives to upgrade the skills of their incumbent workforce.
POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Manager of Refugee Employment Services, the Lead Instructor supervises instructors, oversees and coordinates instructional services, and delivers Vocational ESOL and training instruction. They develop and modify contextualized curriculum and daily lesson plans for vocational English classes with the goal of supporting participants to get a new or better job; deliver vocational ESOL and training to participants; regularly evaluate progress and skill attainment of individual participants; track outcomes; and contribute to strategic team meetings both in Refugee Services Department as well as agency-wide. They supervise instructors, providing guidance and support around differentiated curriculum development; student engagement, retention, attendance and skill development; and substitute teach classes for the site as needed. The Lead Instructor works collaboratively with each member of the team to assist students in obtaining the skills needed to secure employment.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Hire, train and supervise program staff

Regularly observe instructors and provide constructive feedback. Provides all supervisees with a written annual evaluation meeting all agency deadlines for the process

Assist program staff in areas of difficulty and provide additional support when needed

Lead regular staff meetings and team-based projects

Work collaboratively with and encourage collaboration between team members and other departments to ensure performance goals are met

Take ownership of the Lead Instructor role as leader both inside and outside the classroom

Accountability and results focused:

Establish, track and meet program dashboard indicators (ex. enrollment, retention, skill attainment, client satisfaction)

Develop and modify curriculum based on the needs of both the students and the overall program goals

Incorporate new trends and skill components into the curriculum on an ongoing basis to ensure the content delivered is current

Intervene where necessary in classes where goals are not being met and provide support and strategies for instructors to improve performance

Generate strategy and solutions in response to unforeseen change, setbacks and challenges

Assign and respond to student work in a timely and ongoing basis

Evaluate student progress on a regular basis, as well as provide students with feedback regarding performance in class and any obstacles that may be impeding progress
Administrative and communication skills:

Complete all administrative tasks related to assessment, enrollment, tracking, and communication with students

Regularly follow up and engage with students who are not attending class

Ensure all data for the site is entered into database accurately and in a timely manner

Communicate regularly with Manager and team members to ensure smooth delivery of services

Resolve disagreements and conflict in a professional and productive manner

Track and report attendance, homework completion, classroom participation and testing outcomes on a weekly/monthly basis

Complete program summary reports for employers, funders, JVS leadership and other stakeholders

Provide all supervisees with a written annual evaluation meeting all agency deadlines for the process

MINIMIUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

2-3 years of workplace or related training/teaching experience

Knowledge of adult learning theory

Ability to work respectfully and effectively with a diverse group of clients at all levels of the organization

EDUCATION REQUIRED:
BS in Education or related field
Master’s in Applied Linguistics or TESOL preferred
Certification in TESOL or related certification

WORKING CONDITIONS: This position will be a mix of in-person and remote work. It will require regular travel to the JVS office.
