The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean facility, to include equipment, furniture, and linens where applicable. The focus of this position is to provide a sanitary environment for the people supported and assist the staff in infection control. The Custodian must implement the cleaning schedules as outlined by the supervisor and assist the staff in the clean up of day to day spills or accidents. The Custodian is expected to appropriately respond to the guidance of the supervisor or facility staff, when appropriate when maintenance or janitorial types of needs are required. Minor repairs, painting, furniture assembly will be required.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Custodian is responsible for compliance with applicable Federal, State and Local laws, and following John F. Murphy Homes, Inc. (JFM) policies, practices and procedures. Discrepancies are to be reported directly to the supervisor as appropriate.
1. Communicate directly with the staff and people supported as necessary, verbally or in writing in a clear, accurate, respectful manner to meet job objectives. Must follow both verbal and written instructions pertaining to janitorial routines.
2. Be aware of the routines and needs of the staff and people supported. Assist the facility’s staff in meeting janitorial needs by adjusting the routine or schedule to meet theirs. Teamwork is a must in meeting the job duties.
3. Must be familiar with equipment used for the general cleaning and upkeep of the facility. Knowledge of the proper use of cleaning equipment, supplies, and chemicals used for cleaning their proper place of storage. Adherence to OSHA requirements essential.
4. Will at times be responsible for minor maintenance and repair needs of the building(s) and assets within according to the skills and certification for the job. For emergency repairs, report it to the supervisor to ensure immediate action takes place for appropriate resolution of the problem.
5. Must follow established procedures and guidelines in order to ensure the personal safety and the safety of others. Must follow OSHA guidelines / standards as applicable. Complete monthly checks of exit/fire signs, participate in routine safety response trainings and fire drills.
6. Must immediately report any suspected incidents of abuse, neglect or exploitation of a person we serve to the supervisor or the Senior Director of Children Services. Report any issues that may impact on the safety, health, cleanliness and comfort of the people served or their environment.
8. While on duty, interaction with individuals both internal and external to JFM must be professional and appropriate to the circumstances.
9. It is expected that employees report to work on time and work to the end of the scheduled shift unless otherwise excused. There may be times when working holidays, weekends and overtime are a requirement. Must attend meetings and scheduled trainings and successfully complete required trainings.
10. Related duties may be added to this position as needed.
JOB COMPONENTS:
1. At times this position will involve contact with information that must be kept confidential. Strict adherence to maintaining information on a "need to know" basis is required.
2. Must make independent decisions concerning daily routines, safety needs, emergency situations, rearranging workloads and other day-to-day situations. A supervisor is available to ask questions and provide assistance.
3. Regular interface or contact with people served, guardians, family members, correspondents, and other visitors to the schools.
4. Daily work activity is conducted in the facility, adjacent grounds, vehicles and outbuildings.
5. Use of industrial and standard home cleaning equipment, machinery, supplies to include but not limited to: mops, brooms, cleaning liquids (chemicals), soaps, vacuum cleaner, buffer, ladders and small power tools, ect.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Education: Must have High School diploma or GED
2. Experience: No experience required, 1-2 years in a janitorial or maintenance position preferred.
3. Driving: A Maine Driver's License and a good driving record are required.
4. Physical Abilities: Ability to bend and stoop with ease. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. or more with assistance, walk, twist, push, pull, stretch and reach over-head. Must be able to observe the needs of the staff and people we serve by sight and sound. Must be able to do manual labor for extended periods of time and be able to work around others without disrupting their work.
