The Director of Data Science will lead the Data Science team and play a key role in our journey of applying innovative data science solutions to drive business improvement and competitive advantage.
At the core of our business strategy is the value of reliable, real-time data - “the great equalizer” - and insights that come out of the data using Data Science. Our ability to leverage cognitive, diagnostic, predictive and prescriptive analytics to drive speed and agility in our supply chain will give us a competitive edge. Accelerated adoption of cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning/Operations Research (AI/ML/OR) models embedded in the operational workflow is required to achieve our goals.
As a Data Science Director, you will be responsible for defining and driving our AI/ML/OR strategy and roadmaps. You will work with global MedTech supply chain business partners, in-house data scientists, data engineers, product management and J&J Technology teams to identify new project opportunities and product features, identify best-fit AI/ML/OR models, prioritize key models and capabilities, lead the buildout of minimum viable products (MVPs) and scale those MVPs to full stack solutions and work with business partners to fully deploy those solutions for maximal value generation. You will be managing a world-class data science team with highly motivated, experienced and talented team members and will play a key role in continuously growing the team’s technical capabilities and strengths. You will also be an innovation leader who will continuously ideate novel concepts to digitally transform the supply chain into an intelligent, efficient, agile and resilient supply chain. You will be co-managing the data science innovation “funnel” in collaboration with product management and business stakeholders to prioritize the most value-added capabilities. Overall, you will be responsible for envisioning and synthesizing a data science portfolio that delivers sustained short- and long-term value to our MedTech Supply Chain.

Major Responsibilities:
- Define and own data science product vision, strategy and capability roadmaps to address unmet business needs, aligned with MedTech Supply Chain strategic objectives.
- Partner with diverse groups of MedTech supply chain business leaders across different functions (e.g., manufacturing, quality, procurement, planning, logistics, customer experience) and data science product management teams to jointly prioritize business opportunities and to deploy data science products.
- Support data science teams in the identification and prioritization of best-in-class and fit-for-purpose AI/ML/OR models for different business use cases.
- Sustain and continuously improve data science model management workflows (e.g. translation of business requirement documents into functional model specifications, code reviews, model documentation, unit/system integration testing, user acceptance testing, SDLC compliance) to maximize AI/ML/OR model performance metrics.
- Proactively collaborate with internal data science and external experts (from universities, peer group of companies and vendors) to synthesize novel AI/ML/OR models.
- Manage highly talented team of data scientists by providing continuous coaching and guidance across diverse areas such as model selection/prioritization, model development, data science processes, business stakeholder communications, as well as personal and professional development.
- Collaborate with data/software engineers and solution architects to ensure end-to-end performance of data science models and solutions with the timely delivery of products per requirements.
- Manage priorities and trade-offs between customer experience, performance and operational support.
- Communicate data science product strategy, roadmap, deployment status and results with senior management.
- Lead research and experimentation of cutting-edge data science techniques for impactful applications in MedTech Supply Chain.

Education:
- Masters or Ph.D. degree in Data Science, Operations Research, Machine Learning/AI, Computer Science, Engineering, Economics or another highly quantitative field.
Qualifications:
- 10 years of hands-on data science experience is required with building, testing and deployment of AI/ML/OR models including supervised/unsupervised machine learning, mathematical optimization and scenario simulation/supply chain digital twins. GenAI experience (e.g. LLMs) is a plus. Hands-on experience would demonstrate:
- Ability to build AI/ML models in languages such as Python using AI/ML packages such as Scikit-Learn, PyTorch, Prophet, TensorFlow, etc.
- Ability to build optimization models using libraries such as Gurobi, CPLEX and simulation models using tools such as Simio, Arena, etc.
- 5 years of leadership experience managing and developling data science teams is required.
- Experience with deployment of AI/ML/OR models to healthcare supply chain use cases in end-to-end planning, value chain management, manufacturing, customer logistics, etc. is preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to manage and sustain complex data science platforms leveraging SDLC and other model management workflows involving code reviews, code version control, model documentation management, model training and testing (e.g. User Acceptance Testing) is required.
- Demonstrated experience incubating and deploying new AI/ML/OR models by collaborating closely with business, data science and IT teams as well as external vendors is required.
- Excellent communication skills leveraging business acumen (i.e. translating impact of data science model selections on business KPIs) and ability to simplify complex topics for broad audiences across all levels including senior executives are required
- Proven ability to drive, manage, and influence multiple, competing priorities and projects and work cross-functionally with urgency in a fast-paced environment where continuous innovation is required.
- Experience with Agile methodology and tools (e.g. Jira, Bitbucket) is preferred.
- Ability to work flexibly and work in ambiguous situations is preferred.
- Strong knowledge of MedTech, Supply Chain or Commercial Operations is preferred.
- Strong customer focus (internal & external) and experience managing professionals from multiple disciplines is preferred.
- The ability for up to 20% travel, including international travel, is required.
