This position is responsible for leading a team of Strategy and Deployment (S&D) professionals within the Business, Innovation and Advocacy Office of the Global Development (GD) organization. This team plays a central role in the development and execution of the overall strategy for GD, including alignment and tracking of functional goals and objectives. This team also has accountability for financial management, workforce and technology management planning, communications, and culture development for the entire GD organization. The position will be accountable to assure consistency in how these responsibilities are supported and implemented by the Business Operations teams in each function.

This position serves as the Decision Support Lead (DSL) for the GD Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and is expected to work directly with SLT members individually and as a group in developing and aligning on the overarching strategy for GD, including working norms that are foundational to the culture within GD. The DSL is responsible for SLT meeting planning, agenda and logistics as well as driving SLT to decisions. In addition, this position will establish a process for evaluating, prioritizing, and tracking of all non-drug projects, ensuring that that they are consistent with GD strategic objectives and not exceeding the overall budget set for non-drug projects.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

Decision Support Lead (DSL)

  • Plan and prepare for SLT meetings and other important strategic connection points with the organization with agenda’s and supporting materials
  • Facilitate SLT meetings and drive SLT toward making decisions with agreement on next steps
  • Coordinate follow-up on action items and next steps

Strategy

  • Deploy a compelling, winning strategy for GD
    • Align on JRD Strategy & roadmap, ensure that G&Os tie in (JRD & J&J) and cascade down
  • Lead the development and alignment of GD’s strategic framework
    • Vision, Mission, Strategic Tactics, Goals & Objectives
  • Coordinate operationalization of the strategy for each team and function
    • Including the setting of financial and operational goals and objectives (G&O)
  • Ensure appropriate resources are allocated and in place to deliver on the strategic framework
  • Manage prioritization and funding allocation for NDPs (non-drug projects)
    • Establish NDP Selection Committee / rules for selecting & tracking implementation of NDPs
  • Ensure a global and consistent approach for operational activities that span across GD
  • Provide performance metrics based on Strategy, JRD & GD goals and objectives
  • Lead Quarterly Business Reviews with SLT and other key partners

Financial Management

  • Partner with Finance to provide transparency and oversight of GD Budget, Investments and efficiencies
    • 10,000 person organization with a budget of $1.7B
  • Establish a business review process and ensure that it is executed consistently within each GD function

Workforce and Technology Management Planning

  • Drive effective human capital and technology management planning that is aligned to the GD Strategy
    • In partnership with HR and IT, drive the human and technology capability assessment to create baseline and develop 3-year investment requirements and roadmap and implementation plan
    • Collaborate with HR on the strategy for optimal geographic hiring footprint, as defined through the new delivery model for FLEX and FT J&J
    • Align workforce needs with infrastructure and facilities management strategy connected to JRD and J&J facilities planning
  • In partnership with HR and J&J Learn, ensure the deployment of training and learning for the GD
  • Evaluate progress against Talent Strategy with HR

Communications, Change Management and Culture

  • Ensure Strategy Adoption Deeper into the Organization
    • Invest in People & Culture by driving transformation initiatives centrally, managing change, and ensuring talent development strategies are pulled through effectively across GD
    • Ensure internal communication (incl. change efforts) is aligned to strategic vision and new ways of working (e.g., more central guidance than before)
    • Develop and govern GD identity and culture values that are aligned with overarching JRD culture, to ensure pull-through
  • Cascade Communications strategy to functions
  • Create and maintain a Communications calendar
  • Partner with Corporate Communications on overall Communications Strategy

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • BA/BSc or equivalent required; MBA or other Scientific Master’s degree preferred
  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience required
  • In depth understanding of drug development in the Pharmaceutical industry
  • Pharmaceutical Industry is preferred but strategy development experience in other industries is useful.
  • Professional maturity to partner effectively with functional heads and their Business Operations leads
  • Highly collaborative leader who is able to influence without authority
  • Strategic mindset with ability to guide development of a coherent and compelling strategy
  • Independent thinker with ability to bring new ideas up for consideration
    • Evaluates and looks for new ideas from outside of JNJ
  • Manages the development and continuous improvement of S&D capabilities
  • Makes an impact as a coach of direct reports to help them improve their skills and abilities
  • Strong facilitation skills to run effective meetings that result in clear decisions and assigned next steps
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office applications: Powerpoint, Word and Excel
  • Drives a Credo-based culture with a diverse and inclusive environment

The anticipated base pay range for this position is $163,000 to $282,900.

The compensation and benefits information set forth in this posting applies to candidates hired in the United States. Candidates hired outside the United States will be eligible for compensation and benefits in accordance with their local market.
