What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanical Technician position at Johnson Matthey?

To follow prescribed procedures, policies and codes to mechanically inspect, troubleshoot, repair and install equipment as required to maintain and repair existing production equipment. This will not include mechanical disassembly of robotic systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Receives instructions covering the schedule and emergency repair, installation and inspection work to be done.
- Inspects plant equipment for defects such as misalignment, wear, insufficient lubrication, etc.
- Determines the best way of making repairs to minimize interruption of production.
- Advises when immediate shutdown of equipment is necessary to minimize damage or when temporarily continued operation will have no harmful effect.
- Dismantles, cleans, repairs, replaces, installs, maintains, assembles, lubricates, and adjusts equipment for proper operation.
- Operates simple machine tools.
- Erects scaffolds and performs rigging as necessary.
- Interprets drawings and sketches, plans details of working procedures, tools and material requirements, selects materials suitable for job.
- Familiar with and able to operate lathes and milling machinery to perform minor fabrications and repairs.
- Lays out work.
- Prepares surfaces for welding, set-up and assemble construct fixtures as required. Performs brazing and welding in all positions; makes any type and size weld, preheating parts when required.
- Cleans, grinds, and flame anneals parts and welded joints as required; uses burning equipment to dismantle assemblies and to cut material to size and shape.
- Exercises all safety precautions.
- Sets up and operates pipe bending, threading, and cut off equipment and uses various hand tools.
- Shapes, fabricates, and installs pipe as required for transport of gases and liquids.
- Sets up and operates sheet metal fabricating equipment. Fabricates and installs ductwork for heating and ventilating.
- Make calculations essential in estimating material requirements.
- Sets-up and operates wood working tools as required. Performs a variety of rough and finish carpentry works.
- Installs prefabricated wood and metal parts; performs glazing as required.
- Dismantles various types of roofing and siding. Erects scaffolds and siding. Erects scaffold and safety barriers as required.
- Operates and maintains boilers and mechanical equipment as, but not limited to, air compressors, emergency generators, ventilating and refrigerating equipment, and boiler-feed water pumps.
- Responsible for proper treatment of water.
- Maintains records, such as temperatures, hours of operation, fuel consumption and deliveries, temperature, analyses of flue gases and others as required.
- Prepares surface for painting. Prepares and applies paints and coatings as required. Utilizes company vehicles for maintenance functions.
