Position Summary: To provide enrolled students of secondary school age an opportunity to participate in interscholastic athletic activities that will foster physical skills, a sense of worth and competence, a knowledge and understanding of the pleasures of sport, and the principles of fair play.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Organizes and administers the overall program of interscholastic athletics.
- Provides leadership in the selection, assignment, and evaluation of athletic coaches.
- Fosters good school-community relations by keeping the community aware of and responsive to the athletic program.
- Coordinates with the approval of the building principals the organization and scheduling of all interscholastic athletic events.
- Hires officials, team physicians, policemen, and ticket sellers as required, and assumes along with building administrators general responsibility for the proper supervision of home games.
- Arranges transportation for athletic teams.
- Arranges provisions for meals and lodging for athletic teams and cheerleading squads when appropriate.
- Develops and places into operation appropriate rules and regulations governing the conduct of athletic activities.
- Verifies each athlete's eligibility according to the requirements adopted by the high school association and/or the local Board of Education.
- Prepares and administers the athletic program budget.
- Requisitions program supplies and equipment.
- Supervises all ticket sales and fund-raising events of the athletic program, and assumes responsibility for proper handling of funds.
- Arranges all details of visiting teams' needs, including lodging, meals, towels, gymnasium services, and field assistance, as appropriate.
- Advises the principal and community schools coordinator regarding the non-school use of playing fields and facilities.
- Arranges field and gym practice schedules.
- Provides for the physical examination of all athletes and cheerleaders in August.
- Keeps records of the results of all junior and senior high school athletic contests, and maintains a record file of all award winners, stating the date and type of award including athletic scholarship.
- Plans and supervises an annual recognition program for school athletes.
- Teaches no more than three academic classes as a general rule.
- Coordinates along with the director of environmental services the maintenance and upkeep of athletic fields and gymnasiums at all secondary schools.
- Works closely with principals of secondary schools and with the director of environmental services.
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as requested by the superintendent and/or high school principal.
- Knows and carries out Board policies.
