The Scarfer is a key component for our workforce. As a Scarfer, you will perform specific labor duties that include the use of different types of hand tools.
Job Responsibilities:
· Sets up and operates scarfing torch to remove various types of defects from steel slabs.
· Opens valves, observes pressure gauges, and turns valve wheels to regulate gas oxygen pressure, as necessary.
· Checks various types of slab grades by using test scarfing methods.
· Cuts and/or trims steel slabs using a portable cutting torch.
· Responsible for reviewing slab conditions to make sure they meet company requirements.
· Duties include measuring slabs and comparing to their intended physical specifications.
· Maintain slab identifications, complete production, and quality paperwork, as necessary.
· Communicates with Crane Operator and Kress Carrier Operators to move slabs as needed.
· Assists other scarfers and/or workers as needed.
· Maintain upkeep on scarfing torches, installing torch tips, and report safety issues as needed.
· Keeps scarfing area clean and helps Crane Operator with scrap removal.
· Attends safety meetings/seminars as necessary.
· Wear personal protective equipment as required.
Requirements:
- Minimum 2 years of industrial experience.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- The position requires rotating shift work, which will include Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.
- The position requires overtime work as needed.
- Adherence to safety procedures/guidelines at all times. Safety is our core value which requires you to wear safety protection such as hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, protective clothing, boots with metatarsal protection, and when necessary, respirator equipment.
- The position requires punctuality, consistent attendance, and self-direction for the success of the operations.
