Overview
OMNI is honored to be retained by Kansas City Public School Retirement System (KCPSRS) in the search for a Senior Financial Accountant. This role will support KCPSRS in overseeing a wide range of fiscal accounting and financial activities.
KCPSRS is designed to provide a significant and stable source of retirement, disability and survivor benefits for the employees of the Kansas City, Missouri School District; the Kansas City Public Library; the charter schools within the boundaries of the Kansas City Missouri School District; and the Retirement System.
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Executive Director, this role will:
- Manage all general, property, and investments accounting, KCPSRS’ payroll, procurement, and financial reporting functions.
- Be responsible for development and implementation of fiscal accounting recommendations.
- Implement new accounting standards and maintain internal financial controls.
- Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and Governmental Accounting Standards Board rules and pronouncements.
- Plan, manage, and coordinate monthly & financial year-end closing activities.
- Reconcile investment funds, audit reports, bank statements, and general ledger accounts.
- Coordinate the annual audit for the Pension System and Schedule of Employer Allocations and Schedule of Pension Amounts by Employer.
- Prepare and review annual financial and actuarial valuation reporting.
- Manage distribution of audit reports and billing to each Employer, accounts payable and collection of receivables for reporting and monitoring of financial activities of KCPSRS.
- Audit accounting data to ensure the authenticity and legality of expenditures.
- Oversee quarterly death reporting process with the State of Missouri Department of Health and Social Services and Pension Benefit Information.
- Advise and assist in developing budget estimates and supporting data.
- Assist the executive director with all investment fund transactions with KCPSRS’ custodial bank.
- Prepare wire transfers and documents for investment distributions, capital calls.
- Provide advice, respond to inquiries, and provide necessary assistance on accounting-related issues and other financial matters.
- Prepare travel per diems and travel expense reports.
- Prepare insurance applications and reviews insurance broker’s proposals annually to renew coverages and makes recommendations.
- Develop and deliver presentations to stakeholders and team members.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or closely related field. Master's degree preferred.
- Certified Public Accountant designation is a plus.
- 7 years of experience as a staff accountant or accountant in investment operations within a public pension system or similar organization preferred.
- Knowledge of or interest in issues affecting defined benefit plans.
- Knowledge of the functions of a pension system, its operating procedures, and regulations.
- Knowledge of federal, state, local regulations, and legislation impacting the Retirement System.
- Knowledge of all relevant accounting principles, rules, pronouncements, and IRS codes.
