Duties, Responsibilities & Other
KCI is looking for bright and highly motivated college students (rising juniors, rising seniors or rising graduate students) to support and learn from our talented and diverse team of engineers, planners, scientists, and construction managers.
- The internship would support KCI’s Natural Resources Practice out of our Sparks, Maryland headquarters. Our Natural Resources group works in a variety of environmental, natural resource, and water resources subject areas for private clients and state and local government in the mid-Atlantic region.
- The internship will provide great experience for students interested in environmental science, planning, and natural resource restoration work and are looking to gain experience with a consulting firm specializing on those areas.
- The intern will work as a team member on projects including wetland and forest delineation, stream restoration, water quality sampling, and biological stream monitoring. Duties will include field work collecting stream, wetland, and water quality data; data processing and statistical analysis; GIS analysis and mapping; and report writing.
- The position could require travel to other KCI offices or out of state work.
- Field work conducted in the summer can be strenuous and physically demanding.
- Preferred experience includes, fieldwork having to do with streams, wetlands, biological stream monitoring (benthic macroinvertebrates, fish), vegetation sampling, familiarity with natural resources mitigation, and the ability to work in ArcGIS, CADD programs, and Microsoft Office products.
Qualifications
- Enrolled in college in a degree program including Biology, Envirionmental Science, Geography, Civil or Envirionmental Engineering or a related program.
- No experience required.
- Minimum GPA 3.0
- Pre-employment drug screening is a condition of employment. Background and motor vehicle checks may be required based upon position.
Performance Expectations
- Complete Annual Individual Training Program
- Comply with all KCI policies and procedures
- Coordinate with other practices and sub-consultants as required
- Ensure projects fulfill ISO compliance requirements
- Complete other duties as required/assigned
- Achieve or exceed budgeted individual utilization target(85% typical)
- Attend bi-weekly(or more frequently as necessary) meetings with project team on all projects/tasks
- Complete all tasks on time and within budget while fully meeting the scope
- Operate within specified (corporate or project) budget parameters
- Assist with preliminary concept designs and submit for approval
- Compare field data to base plan
- Conduct site visits and gather data, including measurements, sketches, notes and photographs as needed
- Prepare design calculations, drawings, specifications and cost estimates for review and approval
- Review and approve shop drawings
