Summary:This role is a leadership role and the selected candidate must be a SME in financial systems/process...specifically in Workday Financials. Candidates must have a proven track record of strategic oversight of workday financials - working with the end users' needs/requests and consulting on what the system can do to meet them from a strategic, holistic level. Selected candidate will manage the roadmap of enhancements, stay abreast of functionality changes, and work with API partners. The selected person must have strong business acumen with eloquent communication skills to diplomatically share what can and can't be done; establish a team culture of positivity and accountability.
Job Overview
The Director of Financial Systems and Processes is a senior-level position. This position provides technical stewardship and strategic leadership for the operations of the core Workday Financials system and technical services – including all reporting, data security, and system integrations services in Workday Financials. In addition to maintaining existing system operations, this Director will be responsible for implementing new system functionality as delivered by Workday and in response to requirements. The Director will provide day-to-day oversight for the direction, development and maintenance for the Workday Financials system and all integrations to other systems. The Director will be responsible for managing technical and functional resources on the Core Financial Support Team.
The position is responsible for collaborating with stakeholders and these stakeholders include leadership and executives, subject matter experts, business owners and financials users. The Director will partner with the business owners to maintain, improve and identify system and process improvements for the financial system, reports and processes. It is critical that the Director understand the business owners' future strategy and goals in order to formulate the optimal system and processes required to meet those goals. The Director will provide day-to-day oversight for the direction, configuration and maintenance of the Financial system and associated systems and processes. This position serves as the primary liaison with the all users throughout the community and manages the functional leads within the Core Team in each business area: Financial Accounting (GL), Endowment Accounting, Revenue Management, Budgeting, Assets, Expenses, Projects, Procurement, Accounts Payable, Pre-Award and Post-Award Grants Management; as well as in the areas of Security, Reporting and Integrations. The Director is also responsible for the Client Financials training program in user support of system functionality.
A key role of the Director is the alignment of business processes and administrative systems with the missions of the Client and its constituents. In furtherance of this goal, the Director oversees the communication, change management and training activities related to Workday Financials functionality. The Director's activities are guided by both changing, rapidly evolving technical capabilities and the Client's needs as prioritized by the business owners.
In order to ensure appropriate alignment of priorities, the Director is responsible for collaborating with vendors and peer institutions as appropriate. The Director is also responsible for the development and deployment of appropriate audit and information technology practices for security, change management, project management and business continuity planning.
As a leader of the financial systems operations, this position has the overall accountability for the strategy, operations, acquisition, contracting, system upgrades, project deliveries, optimization efforts, analytics/reporting, vendor management, and ongoing application support. The work includes requirements-to-production processes, quality assurance, software release management, and documentation of applications and processes.
Work Interactions and Work Mode Designation
This position reports to the AVP - Enterprise Business Systems and has 5-7 direct reports. The incumbent will drive efforts to develop and execute strategic plans to transform and evolve the portfolio of applications and technology platforms to anticipate and meet future customer and university needs. This position will collaborate with key stakeholders to ensure that the technology services and operations meet the demands of the community. This position will get buy-in for projects, priorities, and goals and provide strategic direction and serve as an executive sponsor to mature data governance practices.
The successful candidate will possess strong customer service orientation, outstanding interpersonal, organizational, written and oral communications skills and should have a demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with senior (non-technical) leadership as well as with highly technical staff.
Requirements and Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree in Finance, Computer Science, Management of Information Systems, or related disciplines, or equivalent experience is required. Master's degree or CPA a plus.
  • At least 5 years of increasing senior IT technical and managerial responsibilities. Experience in a medium to large technology organization in a university environment is desired.
  • Broad technology management experience with deep expertise in implementing, maintaining and supporting enterprise systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and executing IT roadmap and strategy, specifically focusing on Financial administrative systems (e.g. Workday).
  • Prior experience supporting or leading implementation of cloud based Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system preferably Workday HCM or Finance.
  • Development and maturation of data governance practices across a medium to large organization, preferably in a university environment.
  • Preferably possess strong functional knowledge of the core Workday Financials product, as well as Workday reporting, integrations, and security configuration.
  • Balance demand for resources among multiple complex simultaneous projects, operational enhancements, break-fix, and maintenance requests. Develop strategy and resource plans to anticipate demand for implementation services and resource needs.

Function

  • Provides day-to-day supervision and project management for the Financial, Grants Management and Budgeting system.
  • Manages the support of the core business and administrative systems and processes.
  • Supervises individual contributors and team leads in support of system upgrades, enhancements, and/or replacements.

Coordinates staffing resources to ensure appropriate resource allocation. Supports business units, identifies and resolves system issues.
Function

  • Monitor projected changes / enhancements to Workday functionality in order to provide business units with short and long range plans and impacts. The plans should include impact on processes within Workday and outside of Workday. Educate Workday community / product development with issues, required enhancements and their priority.
  • Manages Workday releases, assesses impact on the organization and business processes, and manages training and communication.

Collaborates with business owners, information services team and other higher education organizations to ensure best practices, consistency with strategic technology and efficiency.
Identify business process improvements that can enrich functional operations, collaborate with business units to execute improvements, respond to functional user requests, lead project implementations and implement new functionality

  • Coordinates all staff-related actions and performance appraisals of staff to ensure a quality workforce.
