Formulation Scientist (Antimicrobial)

Kelly Services is actively recruiting for a Formulation Scientist (Antimicrobial ) located in Cincinnati, Ohio. This opportunity is a perm (direct hire), full-time position.

The Formulation Scientist (Antimicrobial) will be responsible for the formulation, development, and support of new and existing biocide products. Will also be responsible for the completion of preliminary challenge testing to generate data for new biocide development, product claims, registrations, and market applications.

Key Responsibilities of the Formulation Scientist (Antimicrobial) includes:

• Develop and evaluate new biocide formulations to meet customer needs.
• Oversight of the Microbiology lab.
• Ensure the fulfillment of and adherence to biosafety policies.
• Develop and execute laboratory work plans/schedules to deliver project milestones.
• Demonstrate project management and organizational skills.
• Responsible for accurately recording experimental methods, materials, and results in laboratory notebooks, analyzing data and evaluating results, effectively communicating and presenting findings at group meetings.
• Prepare and submit samples for industry and governmental testing including assembling required documentation, characterization protocol and characterization study for new biocide products.
• Review final efficacy testing reports, including chemistry, toxicity, performance, and efficacy
• Assist on biocide analytical test method development
• Author technical data sheets, safety data sheets, product data sheets, white papers, technical trade journal articles and marketing tools for new and existing biocide products.
• Provide guidance/troubleshooting/technical and product support for biocide customers
• May Direct laboratory technicians and chemists as required.
• Perform research in a logical, safe, environmentally correct manner.
• Communicate results, verbally and in writing, in an effective, timely manner to internal and external customers.
• Responsible for training laboratory resources in procedures and techniques
• Participate in relevant trade and technical associations.
• Monitor the biocide, preservative, and regulatory areas to constantly increase knowledge in relevant technical fields.

• BS degree in Microbiology, Biological Sciences, Chemistry or related discipline, Biochemistry, or Food Science.
• Proven track record in product formulation for use in HI&I, Personal Care, disinfectants, sanitizers, preservatives, or cleaners
• Knowledge of Antimicrobials, Biocides and Preservatives which may include; Quaternary Ammonium Salts, PAA and Hydrogen Peroxide, Glutaraldehyde, DDBSA, Citric Acid, Green or natural biocides and preservatives.
• Knowledge of US FIFRA, EPA and EU No 528/2012 aka “BP Regulation” or “BPR” biocide regulations and registration processes
• Successful record of problem solving through analytical and creative thinking skills.
• Proven quality system skills with a strong demonstrated belief in continuous improvement.
• Working in a safe and environmentally correct manner.
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment is critical.
• Proven verbal and written communications skills; editing and authoring of technical reports.
• Preferred Requirements for the Formulation Scientist (antimicrobial) includes:
• Advanced degree in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, Food Science or Chemistry
• Three years’ years relevant experience in microbe challenge testing and biocide formulation.
• Knowledge of US EPA standard test methods for evaluating disinfectant and sanitizer products
• Knowledge of biocide formulation techniques targeting a specific pathogen type
• Experience with:

• Growth and maintenance of both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria
• Aseptic technique and experience using an autoclaveWorking knowledge of standard microbiology procedures: CFU determination, MIC, Kirby-Bauer
• Preparing and sterilizing media and supplies.
• Sterile technique
• MIC/MBC testing, biofilm testing, synergy testing.

• Preparing and maintaining stock cultures and/or suspensions.
• Experience working in a GLP environment: General knowledge and understanding of standard and emerging pathogens and the EPA’s required efficacy test methods (Use Dilution Method, Germicidal Spray Products, Modified Germicidal Spray for Wipes).
• Industrial Biocidal experience in areas of specific interest such as public health disinfectants and cleaners, nonpublic health biocides applications for water treatment, Oil and Gas and wood preservation, metal working fluids, HI&I, and Personal Care.
• Proven industry network including external publications in technical and/or trade journals and industry or academic presentations in the biocide field.
