What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director, Research Development position at Kent State University?
Oversees the Office of Research Development unit and has direct working relationships with faculty in their pursuit of extramural research funding, specifically for large interdisciplinary proposals, Center proposals, and research and training proposals of high institutional importance. Works with constituents across the university to create a short and longer-term plan which supports strategic research advancement and growth in line with other divisional efforts that maintain and support a growing R1 university. Reports to Vice President for Research and Sponsored Programs.

Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following:
Facilitate development of large, complex research grant applications in response to funding opportunities identified by faculty or the Division of Research and Sponsored Programs.
Oversee and support development of individual and complex funding proposals through effective interactions with all involved parties and by providing proposal management, proposal editing and/or writing integration services, program and budget development, and high-level advice and guidance.
Hire, mentor, and supervise Research Development personnel, including overseeing and guiding their involvement in developing complex and individual grant applications, and the review and editing of grant components.
Advise faculty on suitability of, and approaches to applying for, large, multidisciplinary funding opportunities from federal and non-federal sources that capitalize on existing strengths and expertise.
Collaborate with individuals at all levels of the organization to ensure successful integration of grant application components and full compliance with all funding solicitation and sponsor requirements.

Develop faculty enrichment and graduate student capacity for success in grantsmanship through workshops and education, providing consultation with faculty during the grant writing process, and providing feedback on draft grant proposals.
Work with Divisional leadership to identify opportunities to strengthen faculty grant applications and to implement solutions.
Ensure efficient coordination between stakeholders and other university administrative offices through collaborative business process development and implementation.
Manage limited submission selection processes.
Participate in relevant institutional committees and working groups.

Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s degree required. Five years of experience working with faculty in an academic or research setting.
License/Certification:
Knowledge Of:
Award mechanisms, including grants, contracts, subcontracts, and cooperative agreements *
Generally accepted accounting, fiscal and reporting principles
Current compliance regulations in all areas of research administration
Skill In:
Written, verbal and interpersonal communication with the ability to communicate effectively with all components of the university (faculty, staff and students) and external constituents *
Interpersonal, organizational, supervisory, and analytical functions
Financial analysis, fiscal management and financial reporting leveraging spreadsheet and database software
Ability To:
Manage high volume and complex transactions
Manage and direct staff
Monitor and maintain budget
Ensure adherence to all policies and procedures of university
Work with confidential information on a daily basis
Lead committees as appropriate
Maintain independent judgment; and a customer service focus across broad and diverse subject areas
Preferred Qualifications – if applicable:
Previous supervisory experience.
Ability to perform complex financial analysis and customized reporting.
