PURPOSE & SCOPE OF THE POSITION: 

Reporting to the Manager, Technical Services, the Chief Mine Engineer, manages a staff of 10 salaried and hourly engineers, geotechnical engineers, and technicians.  The Chief Mine Engineer is responsible for day to day operational engineering, short, medium, and long term mine planning, slope stability analysis, resource model updates, and cost evaluation for a 285,000 ton per day open pit copper mine.  The Chief Mine Engineer ensures the safe execution of day to day engineering team.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Follow safe work procedures and best practices.
  • Oversee the short-range engineers weekly mine planning team.
  • Oversee the mid-range 18 month monthly mine forecast.
  • Oversee and facilitate the Life-of-Mine planning schedule.
  • Generates the annual resource/reserve statement.
  • Manages the geotechnical department and oversees the slope stability program.
  • Works closely with the mill on the generation of Metal production schedules, both long, mid, and short term.
  • Works closely with the Environmental group to ensure that permits are acquired before mining requires them.
  • Prepare, review, and monitor annual operating and capital budgets.
  • Write Authorization For Expenditures. 
  • Effectively communicate project progress to management via weekly and monthly reports.
  • Prepare presentations to communicate engineering information to site management, Corporate Technical Services, and executive levels.
  • Conduct formal performance reviews for direct reports.
  • Willingness to perform other duties as necessary to ensure the success of KGHM.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE & TRAINING:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mine Engineering or a similar field.
  • The successful candidate must have a minimum of 10 years’ mining experience, strong supervisory experience, and a background in exploration.
  • Demonstrated team supervisory skills at an operating mine of up to at least 6 people.
  • Effective safety performance.
  • Experience with resource development including bringing exploration targets from raw prospects to a NI 43-101-compliant resource classification.
  • Budget preparation and cost controls.

PREFERRED EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE & TRAINING:

  • Master of Science Degree in Mine Engineering or related field.
  • The successful candidate must have a minimum of 10 years’ mining experience in open pit copper porphyry operations, strong supervisory experience, and a background in exploration.
  • Study of copper skarn and porphyry districts and deposits.
  • 5 years managing drilling programs.
  • Experience with engineering and economic criteria used for mining/processing of copper porphyry / skarn deposits via open pit methods.

TECHNICAL SKILLS:

  • Ability to meet deadlines and work with minimum supervision.
  • Functional knowledge of multiple resource calculation methods, exploration programs, and Robinson District type geology are all preferred.
  • Significant experience working with mine planning software (preferably MinePlan).
  • Significant experience working with databases (preferably AcQuire).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel.
  • Significant experience working with presentation software (preferably Power Point).
  • Ability to operate light vehicles.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Travel may be required depending on special projects or training, no more than a week at a time.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The Chief Mine Engineer manages a staff of 10 salaried and hourly engineers, geotechnical engineers, and technicians.
  • Management of staff to ensure work is performed on time and within budget.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Light - Exerting up to 25 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 15 lbs. of force frequently and/or a negligible amount of force constantly.  Even when weight lifted is negligible, a job is rated light when: 1) it involves walking or standing to a significant degree: 2) it requires sitting most of the time but involves pushing and or pulling of arm or leg controls: 3) it involves working at a production rate that requires constant pushing or pulling of materials.
