What are the responsibilities and job description for the Luminator position at Kiewit Luminarium?

Kiewit Luminarium is a next-generation science center that joyfully engages people of all ages and backgrounds to explore the astonishing phenomena that shape our selves, our community, and the world. Through our interactive exhibitions and innovative programs, we inspire lifelong interest and careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Our wonderful, purpose-built, 82,000-square-foot facility is now open on the Omaha RiverFront, and we continue to develop the talented team that, together with collaborators and visitors, brings Kiewit Luminarium to life.

What is the Luminator Program?

The Luminator Program is designed for students and emerging professionals who are ready to take their next exploratory steps. 

This program offers paid employment and professional development for students and emerging professionals of diverse backgrounds in a highly engaging, hands-on, and supportive learning environment.

Luminators receive frequent training, practice skills, and build confidence for learning and teaching. 


What will you do as a Luminator?

As essential staff, Luminators explore hands-on exhibits with guests, support and lead a variety of activities, and ensure a fantastic guest experience for all. 

New in 2024 the Luminator program is piloting expansion beyond the four walls of Kiewit Luminarium partnering with after-school organizations that serve communities across the state.

Through this work, Luminators build communication and leadership skills, engage in peer-to-peer mentorship, gain valuable operational experience, and become part of a professional community that will support their continuing journey. 


Luminators can join the Spring Term, April to August, or the Fall Term August to April. 

Luminators will have the option to reapply for subsequent terms.


Required Training will be scheduled in April and August.



ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Embrace Learning and Teaching:

  • Actively participate in regular training and professional development activities.
  • Develop skills to engage with the public, converse with guests, and share information about exhibits and programming. 
  • Practice teaching and learning STEAM content for a diverse range of guests, and other activities.
  • Participate in and support peer Luminators through individual and group learning plus collaborative program work. 

Inspire Curiosity: 

  • Lead inquiry-based learning experiences and engage people of all ages in explorations of Kiewit Luminarium exhibits and activities in a variety of settings.
  • Guide visitors through hands-on activities and programs.
  • Support an excellent guest experience by engaging visitors and sharing in their learning. 
  • Be attentive and answer guest questions, responding in a friendly and helpful demeanor.   

Strengthen Community Connections: 

  • Engage diverse audiences from all backgrounds and ages ensuring accessibility to all.  
  • Collaborate with Luminarium staff and partners to provide STEAM experiences for community events. 
  • Represent and serve as a role model through inclusive, inquiry-based teaching and learning practices.
  • Travel to community events; set up, present, and take down mobile exhibits and activities.

Support Daily Operations:

  • Prepare spaces by tidying, readying materials, and inspecting exhibits to ensure proper working order.
  • Greet and orient individual guests and groups, including school groups as they arrive for field trips. 
  • Provide services and field questions for retail, membership, and ticketing.
  • Assist guests with special needs, lost items or children, and general inquiries. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Is in eleventh or twelfth grade in a public or private high school; or 
  • Is enrolled in a college, university, or other institution of higher education; or   
  • Can begin within twelve months following graduation from a college, university, or other institution of higher education.  
  • Demonstrated interest in education, STEAM, social sciences, and/or facilitating an awesome visitor experience.
  • Able to attend required training at the start of the term.
  • Ability to interact with and shepherd large groups.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment and exercise good judgment with moderate supervision.
  • Ability to interact with people of diverse backgrounds, identities, and ages in a variety of settings.
  • Available to work daytime, evenings, weekends, and occasional holidays.
  • Able to obtain a valid work permit.
  • Multilingual/multicultural individuals are encouraged to apply.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals to perform the essential functions.

  • Ability to move from place to place; lift and carry up to 40 pounds short distances.
  • Ability to perform position functions and must be able and willing to work on-site, in shared indoor and outdoor spaces with staff and the public following guidelines in accordance with the health department and local ordinances.


POSITION DETAILS

  • This is a fixed-term, part-time, non-exempt position. 
  • The starting pay rate is $17 per hour. 
  • The anticipated hours each week are 15-30, depending upon the availability of the Luminator and the training requirements and staffing needs of Kiewit Luminarium as well as partner nonprofit organizations.
