Kings County is seeking to fill one immediate vacancy for a Microbiologist in the Public Health Department. Future vacancies for this position may be filled from the eligible list to be established. The expected life of the eligible list is six months. This position may be open until filled.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Public Health Microbiologist classification is utilized in the Public Health Laboratory Division of the Health Department to perform a variety of microbiological and chemical tests for the diagnosis and control of infectious diseases or abnormal conditions. The Microbiologist is responsible for specimen processing, test performance, and for test results reporting on clinical and environmental specimens. This classification is distinguished from the Clinical Laboratory Technologist in that the latter performs clinical laboratory examinations and tests within the scope of a public health laboratory.

Performs examinations and control tests including mycobacteriological, mycological, parasitological, serological, virological, and bacteriological examinations to determine the absence or presence and nature of disease or abnormal conditions; performs qualitative and quantitative microbiological examinations on clinical specimens, prepares cultures, or environmental samples (such as sputum, blood, stool, food samples, urine, water, human and animal tissues, and other specimens) to isolate and identify infectious disease agents; performs microscopic, chemical, or physical examinations on clinical specimen samples to determine the physiologic conditions associated with diseases; examines various specimens for bacterial toxins and other toxic substances including toxic mold; performs blood lead testing; performs laboratory analysis of drinking water; performs rabies testing; assists the Director in maintaining and supervising the overall operation of the public health laboratory; performs quality control necessary to assure compliance with turn-around time guidelines and maintains quality control records; sets up, operates and maintains equipment and apparatus and performs tests and parallels as directed; analyzes and interprets laboratory data; keeps records and compiles reports regarding laboratory services performed; maintains laboratory in an orderly and sanitary condition; complies with safety and other procedures per federal and state CLIA and OSHA regulations; keeps current on laboratory testing methods and procedures by attending meetings, seminars, and reading and studying professional publications; requisitions and checks laboratory supplies; may assist in the training of other personnel, trainees, or students in the public health laboratory; may transport samples; may perform basic clerical functions including filing and taking inventory.

Possession of a valid Public Health Microbiologist Certificate issued by the California State Department of Health and any combination of education and relevant experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge, skills and abilities would be:
Education: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university, including coursework in pathogenic or medical microbiology or bacteriology, or equivalent subjects required to meet the academic requirements for certification as a Public Health Microbiologist in California.
Licenses: Possession of a valid certificate as a Public Health Microbiologist issued by the California Department of Public Health, and possession of a valid California driver's license.
