ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND

Founded in 1872, The American Chemistry Council (“ACC”) is America’s oldest trade association representing a diverse set of companies engaged in the business of chemistry.  ACC’s more than 150 members include both large multi-national companies as well as small- and medium-sized chemical companies. Its mission is to deliver value to its members through advocacy, using best-in-class member engagement, political advocacy, communications, and scientific research.  ACC is committed to fostering progress in the economy, environment, and society.  To support this innovative $565 billion industry, ACC works to solve some of the biggest challenges facing the nation and world by promoting and protecting the business of chemistry’s leadership in driving innovation, creating jobs, and enhancing safety in performance, processes, and products.

The business of Chemistry:

  • Drives innovations that enable a more sustainable future.
  • Provides 542,000 skilled good paying jobs—plus over 4 million related jobs—that support families and communities.
  • Enhances safety through a diverse set of products and investments in R&D.

Every year, the chemistry industry invests tens of millions of dollars to ensure that the products making modern living possible are safe for consumers, their communities, and the environment. In addition to research initiatives, ACC programs focus on anticipating and preventing accidents, as well as educating the public about how to use products safely.

With an annual operating budget of approximately $128 million and nearly 270 employees, the ACC is one of the largest and most influential associations in the country.  Delivering business value through exceptional advocacy, the Council also provides a wide range of programs and services, including sponsoring extensive research and testing, to complement the organization’s advocacy efforts.

CHEMTREC

Founded in 1971, CHEMTREC, a division of the American Chemistry Council (ACC), is the world’s gold standard for emergency response information services in North America.  It performs a critical role in facilitating the safe transportation and handling of hazardous materials. With over 14,000 customers, CHEMTREC has been the chemical industry’s go-to emergency call center for incidents involving hazardous materials, managing over 150,000 calls annually. CHEMTREC makes chemical hazmat shipping compliance easier and reduces risk through reliable, cost-effective emergency preparedness, government compliance, and around the clock support.  CHEMTREC is a 24/7, Level 1 emergency call center that provides information to emergency responders and others who need assistance during hazardous materials incidents such as spills, fires, leaks, or personnel exposures.  In addition, CHEMTREC provides a mechanism for shippers of hazardous materials to comply with certain domestic and international regulations which require an emergency telephone number to be displayed on shipping and other documentation, where immediate access to product information is necessary.

CHEMTREC has broad reach to large and small companies, as well as non-traditional companies, thus elevating safety performance industry-wide.  Further CHEMTREC provides significant value by offering additional complementary services to ACC members and the entire industry. In addition to call center services, CHEMTREC provides other vital industry services such as:

  • Online Hazmat Training – Professionals of all levels have access to high quality online hazmat training courses to ensure compliance with U.S. Department of Transportation regulations under the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration’s Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations (49 CFR).
  • Lithium Battery Solutions - Compliance for shipping lithium batteries and cells is becoming increasingly complex. As the use of lithium batteries in devices grows across all industries, the greater the risk of safety incidents during shipment. CHEMTREC offers services to ensure compliance with today’s battery regulations and preparation for future requirements.
  • Safety Data Sheets – With more than 6,000,000 records, CHEMTREC houses the largest database of safety data sheets in North America. SDS Direct is a digital platform that provides members with instant access to vital forms to streamline emergency response and mitigate impact quickly and efficiently.

CHEMTREC also serves as a 24/7 reporting and information service for companies that manufacture, ship, transport, or handle hazardous materials (e.g., reporting for quality control, pre-incident notification, crisis communication, etc.).  CHEMTREC has aspects of both a public service and a commercial organization, providing services globally from its facility in Falls Church, Virginia and maintains branch offices in Beijing, China, Sao Paulo, Brazil and in the UK.

CHEMTREC is poised for growth over the next five years including increased market penetration of its L1 Services, geographical growth, additional complementary services, and continued growth in the value chain of response services.
