A day in the life of an LTI Metallurgical Engineer:
- A Metallurgical Engineer performs hands-on metallurgical testing while working in a fast-paced laboratory setting. The position’s primary responsibilities include executing metallurgical tests on a variety of metals, accurately documenting test results in a report format, interacting with other departments and customers, interpreting and following part drawings, specifications, and instructions. Performs various types of metallographic testing including, but not limited to: Grain Size, Microstructure, Macrostructure, Surface Contamination/Alpha Case, Decarburization, Intergranular Attack/Oxidation, and Microhardness.
- Predominantly performs intermediate to advanced, routine and non-routine metallurgical analyses using light optical microscopy with minimal supervision.
- Examinations include, but are not limited to complex microstructure characterizations, microhardness profiles, case depth by optical and microhardness methods, recast layer, sensitization procedures, weld qualifications, defect identification, hydrogen embrittlement, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
- Interprets specifications, procedures, and engineering drawings including ASTM, ASME, AMS, AWS, ISO, SAE, PWA and customer supplied standards.
- Operates specimen preparation equipment, light optical microscopes, stereoscopes, manual and automatic hardness testers, and scanning electron microscope.
- Provides guidance to order entry, sample distribution, sales, and junior analysts/engineers to resolve questions or issues.
- Acquired practical testing certifications such as GE E50TF133 grain size evaluation, certified welding inspection (CWI), etc.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- This position requires a minimum combination of education and related experience performing metallurgical or materials testing. Bachelor's Degree from four-year college or university, and 5 years of experience
- Computer skills required: Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, Laboratory Management Systems and Software.
- Other skills required: Mechanical aptitude, excellent attention to detail, ability to work in a team environment, ability to multi-task and work intermittently in an up-tempo environment.
- This position requires a combination of education and related experience performing metallurgical or materials testing.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen or Green Card Holder.
