    Curriculum Coordinator - English/Language Arts

    Purpose Statement

    The job of Curriculum Coordinator - English/Language Arts K-6 is done for the purpose/s of coordinating program activities in accordance with applicable District, State and Federal policies related to the academic content at the classroom and District level; develop, coordinate, and monitor all applicable state and federal grants, implementing program components; creating long and short term program goals; providing recommendations of expenditures for activities, equipment, and supplies that enhance the assigned program; responding to issues and inquiries from school district administrators, parents, and educators regarding educational reform, curriculum changes, school improvement efforts, benchmark activities, instructional objectives, and program evaluation; directing the development, selection, evaluation, and implementation of instructional programs and materials; developing, implementing, and coordinating a guaranteed viable English/Language Arts curriculum K-6; implementing research based leadership; maximizing two way communication; monitoring program to ensure quality, fidelity, intensity and consistency; improving program efficiency and effectiveness; and serving as resource to District personnel by providing support and guidance based on their subject area knowledge and experience.
    This job reports to the Director of Instruction.

    Essential Functions

    • Manages a wide variety of tasks in compliance with state and federal grant program requirements.
    • Assists in the facilitation and implementation of content area literacy for the purpose of increasing student academic success.
    • Assists school administrators and other coordinators (e.g. staffing, status of curriculum implementation, regulatory compliance, curriculum standards, establishing performance criteria for program and staff, etc.) for the purpose of providing information and supporting them in the overall school/district curricular decisions and operations.
    • Assists staff in the design of new facilities and remodeling of existing facilities for the purpose of ensuring the best instructional climate for student success.
    • Collaborates with colleges and universities regarding concurrent enrollment, AP courses, and alignment of all courses for the purpose of enhancing communication, developing course objectives, and providing increased opportunities for students.
    • Conducts meetings (e.g. to interpret regulatory policies, planning and implementing curriculum, address textbook evaluations, operational issues, development of benchmarks, etc.) for the purpose of disseminating and receiving information and ensuring service delivery in compliance with established guidelines.
    • Confers with other District personnel as may be appropriate regarding instructional techniques, development of curriculum, supervision guidelines and responsibilities, students' needs, etc. for the purpose of providing guidance and mentoring.
    • Directs the development, selection, evaluation, maintenance of services and the implementation of new programs and/or processes for the purpose of providing services within established timeframes and in compliance with related requirements.
    • Facilitates the building and implementation of District assessments, and common assessments for the purpose of providing a measurable guaranteed and viable curriculum for students.
    • Manages curriculum content for the purpose of conforming to District and State curriculum and/or instructional objectives.
    • Monitors expenditures against budget for the purpose of complying with State and District policies and practices.
    • Observes classroom instruction as may be requested by school administrators for the purpose of evaluating the implementation of established curriculum, instructional techniques and classroom management, serving as a mentor and assisting the site administration.
    • Oversees English/Language Arts K-6 program (e.g. District policies and procedures, grant guidelines, State & Federal regulations, budget, etc.) for the purpose of achieving outcomes in relation to District objectives and ensuring compliance to legal requirements.
    • Participates in a variety of meetings (e.g. professional associations, workshops, seminars, conferences, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and gathering information regarding a wide variety of subjects addressing educational reform, curricular issues, school improvement and instructional issues.
    • Performs a variety of personnel related functions if requested by site administrator (e.g. screens, interviews, selects, observes classroom instruction, orients, mentors, provides input into performance evaluations, etc.) for the purpose of addressing staff position needs and/or ensuring instructional staff maintain a high level of competencies and productivity.
    • Prepares English/Language Arts K-6 program budget for the purpose of providing recommendations of expenditures for activities, equipment, supplies, and services that will enhance the assigned program.
    • Recommends curriculum modifications and changes based on District/State needs assessment data, researched based practices, professional sources, etc. for the purpose of complying with best practices, District improvement plans and established guidelines.
    • Researches a wide variety of topics related to curriculum and instruction (e.g. policies, best practices, trends, legislation, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring compliance with established requirements, dissemination of information, securing general information for planning, taking action, and/or responding to requests.
    • Responds to inquiries from individual teachers, schools, and departments with the development of instructional objectives, classroom activities, teaching, and program evaluation for the purpose of providing information, assistance and/or direction.
    • Serves as a resource to District personnel (e.g. new teacher orientation, instructional process, classroom management, curriculum, etc.) for the purpose of providing support, guidance and mentoring when requested based on knowledge and experience to maintain a high level of competencies within the subject area.
    • Serves as a liaison between site administration and/or classroom teachers and the District office for the purpose of enhancing communication between all parties.
    • Supports and implements Board policies, administrative regulations, directives and assists in the development of policies and regulations for the purpose of developing, interpreting, and implementing services and programs and achieving operational goals.
    Other Functions
    Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of varied types and/or purposes; and utilize a variety of types of job-related equipment. Independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate to significant. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with persons of varied educational and cultural backgrounds; meeting deadlines and schedules; providing leadership, direction, and team building; providing opportunities for the exchange of ideas; and setting priorities.

    Responsibility

    Responsibilities include working under direct supervision using standardized routines; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is some opportunity to impact the organization's services.

    Working Environment

    The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 80% sitting, 10% walking, and 10% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.

    Experience: Job related experience within a specialized field with increasing levels of responsibility is required.
    Education: Masters degree in job-related area.
