What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanical Hardware Engineer position at Latitude AI?
Latitude AI (lat.ai) is an automated driving technology company developing a hands-free, eyes-off driver assist system for next-generation Ford vehicles at scale. We’re driven by the opportunity to reimagine what it’s like to drive and make travel safer, less stressful, and more enjoyable for everyone.
When you join the Latitude team, you’ll work alongside leading experts across machine learning and robotics, cloud platforms, mapping, sensors and compute systems, test operations, systems and safety engineering – all dedicated to making a real, positive impact on the driving experience for millions of people.
As a Ford Motor Company subsidiary, we operate independently to develop automated driving technology at the speed of a technology startup. Latitude is headquartered in Pittsburgh with engineering centers in Dearborn, Mich., and Palo Alto, Calif.
Meet the team:
Mechanical Hardware Engineers at Latitude AI are responsible for leading the mechanical integration of sensors and computers for next generation automated driving systems into the vehicle platform. This includes leading sensor placement visibility studies, developing integration requirements, designing prototypes, developing new test methods, executing tests, and collaborating on production vehicle designs. The team works very cross functionally across Latitude AI and the broader Ford organization.
What you’ll do:
- Lead cross-functional work to establish hardware integration requirements and designs for next generation automated driving systems
- Interface with external partners on design and bring-up of automated driving hardware on production vehicle platforms
- Develop and execute verification and validation methods for new robotics systems
- Perform first-principles proof of concept analysis and testing
- Spearhead on-road and laboratory testing to validate advanced concepts
- Analyze test results to characterize performance and assess production risk for new systems
What you'll need to succeed:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics or a related field and 4 years of relevant experience (or Master's degree and 2 years of relevant experience, or PhD)
- Experience with rapid prototyping of mechanical structures for test and development fleets. Fluent with CAD software (CATIA/NX/Others), and FEA tools (ANSYS/Abaqus)

- Interest in using engineering and mathematics fundamentals to decompose and solve challenging robotic systems problems
- Experience performing first-principles analysis to develop and validate hardware designs
- Experience authoring hardware verification methods and conducting laboratory testing, as well as development of corrective action plans for design failures
- A record of using scientific computing tools (MATLAB, Python) to analyze mechanical test data (vibration, thermal, acoustic)
- We operate as a team, so teamwork and strong cross-functional communication skills are essential
Nice to have:
- Experience scaling products from low to high volume manufacturing methods
- Thermal expertise
- Vibration expertise
- 5 Years of experience
