DESCRIPTION
Summary
The Controller is responsible for the cash and accounting operations of the company, to include the preparation of financial reports, state sales and use tax filings, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the company's reported results, for a medium-sized and growing privately-owned family business.
Role Responsibilities:
Finance and Accounting Leadership
- Guides financial decisions by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing policies and procedures of the accounting and related departments
- Oversees accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
- Handles sensitive, confidential information, utilizing their ability to advise management and our outside auditors regarding important financial decisions
- Works closely with the Credit, Accounts Payable and Human Resources Teams
- Protects assets by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing internal controls
- Provides status of financial condition by collecting, interpreting, and reporting financial data
- Prepares special reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends
- Provides financial and detailed account analyses as needed
- Issues timely and complete financial statements
- Coordinates the provision of information to external accountants for the annual reviewed financial statements and tax returns
- Complies with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings in Maryland and surrounding states
- Oversees the administration of the 401k/profit sharing plan
- Coordinates with insurance captive and broker on selection and claim monitoring of general liability, property, auto, worker's compensation and health insurance
- Manages organizational cash flow
- Maintains a documented system of accounting policies and procedures
- Protects operations by keeping financial information and plans confidential
- Contributes to team efforts by accomplishing related results as needed
- Manages, develops and coaches the Staff Accountant
- Completes other tasks as assigned by management, offering assistance when needed
Team Leadership
- Leverage strengths of accounting department team members, helping to clarify roles in order to maximize and reach optimal individual and organizational goals
- Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with associates at all levels throughout the organization, creating and promoting a positive and supportive work environment that aligns with our company culture
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
- GAAP knowledge
- 7 years of progressive experience
- Fluency with MS Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
- Problem solver
- Strong written, verbal and collaboration skills
- Ability to organize and manage multiple priorities
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $120,000.00 - $140,000.00 per year
Schedule:
- 8 hour shift
Ability to commute/relocate:
- Baltimore, MD: Reliably commute or planning to relocate before starting work (Preferred)
