The Welle® Instructor is responsible for the system-wide Behavioral Emergency Systems Safety Training (BESST). The instructor is responsible for teaching safe, recovery-based, trauma-informed techniques that promote partnerships between patients and staff. May be responsible for coordinating education events on campus as well as in the community. Serves as a practicing role model, consultant, and liaison in Welle® for patients/families, staff, and community.
Responsibilities
As part of the Welle® training program provided to employees, Welle teaches trauma-informed care with techniques for supporting a traumatized person with effective and early staff response. Course content includes a combination of lecture, verbal skills practice, and physical skills practice so staff can successfully assess, prevent, and intervene with a potential escalated person in a safe way.
Maintains proficiency in training employees to learn how to recognize and de-escalate aggressive behavior.
Serves as an expert resource for all elements of the training including but not limited to knowledge of:
- M.A.R.T. Principles
- Identification of levels of danger and effective responses
- Defusing techniques
- Restraint Avoidance
- Minimum (negative) Impact Interventions
Participates in the joint effort between Clinical Support Services and Security to provide various levels of training depending on the needs of the participants.
Collaborates with Welle Coordinator to support ongoing instructor education.
May represent the program on appropriate internal committees as determined by the Director of Clinical Practice Support or his/her delegate.
Qualifications
Experience: One year clinical experience in a behavioral health setting; two years preferred. Acute care experience preferred.
Education:
High School diploma or equivalent required. Associate’s degree or advanced training in behavioral health field preferred.
Ability to be trained as a Welle® instructor or be currently trained as a Welle® instructor.
Skills:
Strong interpersonal, organizational and problem-solving skills.
Keyboard skills and ability to navigate electronic systems applicable to job functions.
Ability to communicate, read and write in English. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills.
Licensure
Current Welle® Instructor Certification preferred.
AHA BLS for Health Care Providers required.
