Established by Congress in 1974, the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) is the country's single largest funder of civil legal aid for low-income Americans. LSC currently funds 132 independent, nonprofit legal aid organizations with nearly 800 offices throughout the nation. LSC's mission is to promote equal access to justice and provide grants for high-quality civil legal assistance.
LSC's disaster relief grants provide funds, as needed, to LSC grantees operating in areas affected by government-declared emergencies. These funds are used to address damage sustained or to meet a surge in demand for legal aid. LSC has developed expertise in supporting emergency and disaster responses through the mobilization of a national network of legal services and partners who are equipped to help our grantees better serve low-income clients when disasters or emergencies occur.
